MAURY RIVER
North Main Street was home
in the early 20th century to Blackowned
offices, barber shops, social
halls, a church, and a butcher
shop. Look for plaques describing
the owners and occupants of
these buildings.
Today, horse-drawn tours with
Lexington Carriage Company begin
across from the Lexington Visitor
Center, where you can pick up
walking and driving tour maps.
Maury & James Rivers
Efforts to build a seven-mile canal
from Lexington to Buena Vista
along the Maury River began soon
after the nation was formed. Today,
at the Lexington trailhead for
the Chessie Nature Trail along
the Maury, Jordan's Point Park is
the site of the fascinating Miller's
House Museum.
Visit Buena Vista's downtown
historic district, as well as Glen
Maury Park to see the restored
1831 Elisha Paxton House.
The town of Glasgow overlooks
the Maury and James rivers.
An obelisk in Centennial Park
honors Frank Padget, a slave and
boatman who died while saving
passengers stranded on the
James during a violent storm.
Buena Vista and Glasgow today
are Appalachian Trail Communities.
Paddlers are welcome on
the Upper James River Water
Trail too.
