Brough Brothers Bourbon, Kentucky.
Brough Brothers Distillery is the
first distillery in Kentucky with African
American ownership-not just one
Black owner, but two. And yes, they are
brothers. No, their name isn't " Brough, "
but it's close.
Victor, Bryson (the two owners) and
Christian Yarbrough were born and
raised in Louisville, Kentucky. They
left their hometown to start a spirits
import/export business in the U.K. in
2012, established a footprint in the U.S.
in 2013 and began planning a distillery
in 2017. Their plans came to fruition
on Dec. 31, 2020, when they made their
first legal batch of bourbon and poured
it into an American oak barrel.
In addition to establishing the first
Black-owned distillery in Kentucky,
Bryson Yarbrough used his chemistry

background to become Kentucky's first
Black master distiller.
The brothers' premier product is
their bourbon, made of 75% corn, 21%
rye and 4% malted barley.
Shoe Crazy Wine and Spirits,
Richmond. Gwen Hurt calls herself
an " encore-preneur. " She had enjoyed
a successful career for 15 years-far
removed from the poverty of her childhood-when
the business she was working
for downsized and she lost her job.
To add insult to injury, she and her
daughter Brittny were seriously injured
in a car crash and faced many months
of physical therapy.
Instead of becoming bitter, the two
women turned the lemons into wine
and started a business combining two
long-cherished passions-shoes and
wine. The shoes are in the name and

Put boiling water into a small coffee
cup or mug. Add honey and stir till
incorporated. Add lemon round and
stir. Add lemon juice and whiskey
