CHAIR'S MESSAGE
After months of cold weather, I'm finally
seeing crocuses, daffodils and other bulbs
popping up in the dormant beds in my yard.
Spring means flowers, a return to patios and
decks and reacquainting ourselves with the
barbeque. In yards across Virginia, we're
raking out flowerbeds, putting down mulch
and test-driving our grills in preparation for
warmer temperatures.

And Virginia ABC is right in step. In this issue
you'll learn about botanical spirits that
include unique products such as Crème de
Violette, a brandy-based violet expression,
and St. Germain, made from the elderflower.
We've included delightful cocktail recipes that
feature vodkas flavored with watermelon and basil, strawberry and lemongrass, and
even peach and rosemary. See " Fields of Floral Spirits " on page 16.
Our distilleries column (on page 12) visits Laird & Company, a North Garden distillery
that produces apple brandy, applejack and other apple-flavored products. With
both a spring and fall distillation, the company processes six million pounds of Red
Delicious, Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, Stayman and other Virginia apples annually.
In " Smoke Signals " (on page 32) we offer recommendations for pairing your cookout
with matching drinks and indulging in smoke-kissed spirits. We've included recipes
for cocktails along with spirited food recipes for satisfying main dishes, sides and
desserts. Doesn't Bourbon Chicken or Kentucky White Sauce Ribs make you salivate?
We also take a look at moonshine's increasing popularity, which has transformed
the once-illegal spirit into a $165 million-dollar industry. Virginia ABC carries nearly
100 unique moonshine products, with dozens of these being produced by Virginia
distillers. Read more on page 26.
With a nod to the season of new things, we introduce Virginia ABC's innovative Shipto-Store
program. Customers now have easy access to more than 3,000 products in
our 315,000 square-foot warehouse. With a few quick mouse clicks, you can order

on page 44 to find out how you can explore new and unique products available
through this new program.
I was fortunate to join the staff of our 398th store in Roanoke just a few weeks ago to
celebrate Store 524's grand opening. The event reminded me of the 3,952 full- and
part-time employees-people such as Desiree Stewart, Manager of Store 156 in Cape
Charles-who staff our stores across the commonwealth. Read Desiree's story on page
11. We couldn't provide the level of customer service we're known for without these
amazing teammates. Their dedication makes me proud to be a part of Virginia ABC.
