What's a botanical? It's a spirit
that's flavored by infusing some
part of a plant into the beverage.
This can include seeds, bark,
flower petals, roots, spices,
berries or any other element
from a plant. Gin is traditionally
made with juniper, for example,
and absinthe with Artemisia
absinthium (grand wormwood)
and star anise, fennel or some
other licorice-flavored ingredient.
Botanical spirits have been
on the rise ever since absinthe
was re-legalized in 2007, because
absinthe is made with a number
of botanicals. When the craft
spirits movement kicked off
over the next couple of years,
distillers started experimenting
with botanicals in other drinks,
especially gin and vodka.
Today, distillers are using more
botanicals in their drinks and
using them more creatively. Since
they are by definition natural, and
typically nutritious, botanicals
appeal to anyone looking for a
healthier way to flavor drinks.
They can also provide a greater
variety and depth of flavor.
Seeds, nuts, roots, spices,
petals and berries are
among the plant parts
contributing to flavor and
healthier ingredients.
