hang on ...
Two very different songs, released
44 years apart, honor that delectable
blend of white rum, coconut cream and
pineapple juice that we know as the
Piña Colada.
" Escape (The Pina Colada Song) "
In 1979, a song about two dissatisfied
lovers hit the airwaves. The restless man
decided to scan the personal ads-his
time's online dating and eharmony. One
ad in particular caught his eye: " If you
like Piña Coladas and getting caught in
the rain; if you're not into yoga, if you
have half a brain; if you like making love
at midnight in the dunes on the Cape,
then I'm the love that you've looked for.
Write to me and escape. "
The man answers the ad and discovers
that the woman is his " own lovely lady. "
Originally, singer-songwriter Rupert
Holmes penned these lyrics: " If you like
Humphrey Bogart and getting caught in
the rain. " At the last minute, he decided
to switch out Bogart for an " escape
drink. " His decision was likely a wise
one. It's unlikely that " Escape (The
Humphrey Bogart Song) " would have
risen to the number one song of the
1970s in the United States.
" Cha Cha Cha " The Piña Colada once
again made a splash in 2023, when FinnWATERMELON
MOJITO
Freeze watermelon chunks ahead of
time to ensure a cool, icy summertime
concoction that's never watered down!
▶ 2½ CUPS DE-SEEDED
WATERMELON CUBES, FROZEN
▶ ½ CUP WHITE RUM
▶ ⅓ CUP FRESHLY SQUEEZED LIME
JUICE
▶ ¼ CUP MINT SIMPLE SYRUP
(PACKAGED OR FROM RECIPE
BELOW)
▶ ½ CUP SELTZER WATER
▶ LIME WEDGES, WATERMELON
WEDGES AND FRESH MINT LEAVES
FOR GARNISH
MINT SIMPLE SYRUP
▶ ½ CUP WATER
▶ ½ CUP SUGAR
▶ 2 FRESH MINT SPRIGS
Make the mint simple syrup: Add water,
sugar and mint to a saucepan and heat
over medium-high. Stir until the sugar
dissolves and the mixture comes to a
boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer
for five minutes. Cool in the refrigerator.
Remove the mint leaves before using.
To make the Mojito, combine the frozen
watermelon cubes, rum, lime juice
and simple syrup in a blender. Process
until smooth. Add the seltzer and blend
briefly. Pour into glasses and garnish.

" Cha Cha Cha. " The song was chosen
as the Finnish national selection for
that year's Eurovision Song Contest
and became the fan favorite to win
the competition. It topped the charts
in Finland as well as Latvia, Lithuania
and Sweden, reaching the top 10 in 11
other regions as well.
Like " Margaritaville " and " Escape, "
" Cha Cha Cha " features a disgruntled
man. This one has had " a rough week. " He
heads to a bar and orders a Piña Colada.
Holding the drinks with both hands like
Cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, no
I'm not thinking about tomorrow when
I grab a pint like
Cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, cha, no
After a few of the icy drinks, the
dance floor began calling to him. And
he answers.
Now I'm going to dance
