ou're out shopping for a
weekend party. A stop by your
local Virginia ABC store is on your
to-do list, but when you get to the
grocery store, you spot a bottle
of Fireball Cinnamon as well as
some canned cocktails. Now that's
handy! You drop the drinks in your
cart, unaware that these liquids are
different from what you would get at
your ABC store.
By knowing the differences, you
can be an informed consumer.
So what is the difference?
Malt-based beverages such as
Fireball Cinnamon created a new
niche. They can be convenient and,
for some people, they offer a viable
alternative. On the other hand, they
are not the same as liquor-based
beverages-different ingredients,
different processes, different taste.
Instead of using liquor for these
drinks, producers use a flavorless
and colorless neutral malt base
alcohol. The malt base is brewed
and fermented (like beer) but it isn't
distilled. Flavorings are then added
to mimic the targeted spirit.
A popular canned Margarita, for
example, is made with blue agave
nectar, natural lime juice and real
cane sugar, but not with tequila. A
canned Gin and Tonic adds juniper
oil and other flavorings to a
neutral alcohol base to imitate the
taste of gin.
The alcohol content of these
products can be different, too,
which is why you would find them
at a retailer other than Virginia ABC.
Fireball Cinnamon at your grocery
or convenience store is a 16.5% ABV
malt-based product, while Fireball
Whisky at Virginia ABC stores is a
33% ABV whiskey-based product.
Malt-based alcohol products
offer a convenient alternative. Now
that you know what they are, you
can make sure you're getting what
you want.
