Nothing says summer better than
watermelon! And whether you live in
Virginia's coastal areas, in the central
piedmont or in the mountains of the
western side of our Commonwealth,
this juicy red fruit can be found at most
farmer's markets, roadside produce
stands and grocery stores.
Watermelon is a summer staple, and it's not
just for slicing. In this issue, we offer some
delightful watermelon-themed cocktail
recipes. The fun starts on page 14.

Did someone say tiki? Our story Aloha
Spirits (page 22) shares the history of our
island state and its contributions to the
cocktail scene. Learn about the famed Don
the Beachcomber and Trader Vic's restaurants where
tiki drinks got their start. Of course, we've included tiki recipes for you to try.
For readers who associate summer with outdoor work, we've got something for
you, too. Yard Drinks on the Rocks (page 33) offers more than a dozen ready-to-drink
suggestions for cooling off. No mixing required, just open and pour.
Summer isn't complete without baseball. And to celebrate Major League Baseball's AllStar
Game, Virginia ABC is discounting some of our all-star products. Read more about
this lineup on page 37.
September marks National Bourbon Heritage Month and Virginia Spirits
Month. In recognition of this, our Gift Guide features fine Virginia bourbons. Our
recommendations include a few hard-to-find bourbons that you'll need to ask your
store manager to special-order for you. Or, if you're close to the distillery, you can
purchase the product there.
In our Cooking with Spirits! column, we feature a recipe for Caribbean shrimp that's
flambéed with dark rum. See page 13 and get out your skillet.
We recognize Sharon Hudson, manager of our Nellysford store in Nelson County, in
our Spotlight on Service column. Read about her views on customer service and find
out why her regulars leave her store satisfied, even when their favorite product is out of
stock.
