merica's native spirit is more
popular than ever these days,
and a lot of it is made right here
in Virginia. Distillers have been
making bourbon in the state for well
over 200 years. The first distillery in
America, according to some reports,
was located in Bourbon County,
Virginia (which has since become
part of Kentucky). Even George
Washington, Father of the Country,
manufactured the spirit on his farm
in Mount Vernon.
STANDARD ITEMS
Filibuster Bourbon
750ml - $46.99
This is a 90-proof straight bourbon
whiskey, aged four years or fewer,
and finished in French oak casks.
The distillery was founded in
Washington, D.C. near the Capitol,
but has since moved to the Old
Dominion, in Maurertown.
Filibuster is a blend of Virginia
and midwestern bourbons. The
distillate is aged a second time,
for two to three months, in a
combination of red and white wine
barrels. The flavor profile touches
on black cherry, vanilla, red grapes
and a touch of spice.

Lost Whiskey High
Rye Straight Bourbon
375ml - $29.99
Founded in 2016, the Lost Whiskey
distillery is based in Fairfax on
a rustic property. All of their
bottles are 375ml and come with
a handy leather strap. The taste is
restrained and drinkable. You'll get
a little smoke and spice up front,
followed by the taste of creamy
butterscotch, roasted corn and
sweet pecans.
Reverend Spirits
Bourbon 750ml -
$34.99
This new spirit from Norfolk is
aged four years before hitting the
shelves. On the nose, you'll get
brown sugar, caramel and woody
notes. On the tongue, Reverend
Spirits has cinnamon, stone fruit
and maple syrup. The flavor is
equally sweet, savory and smokey.
Tarnished Truth High
Rye Single Barrel
Bourbon 375ml -
$49.99
The Tarnished Truth Distillery is
located inside the five-star Cavalier
Hotel in Virginia Beach. In fact,
their space used to be the laundry
room. If you eat in the hotel's Hunt
Room restaurant, you can look
through a large window and see
the distillers at work. This bourbon
matures for three years before
bottling and has a mashbill of
60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted
barley. The taste is complex and
eclectic with notes of citrus, black
pepper, fudge, oak and toffee.
Ironclad Bourbon
375ml - $38.69
This is a 90-proof, small-batch
bourbon made with Virginia corn,
rye, wheat and barley in Newport
News. It's distilled twice in a
500-gallon still and then aged for
two summers in casks of American
oak. Ironclad is a well balanced
whiskey that starts sweet and the
flavor develops into smoke, spice
and citrus with a long finish.
