Mountain Valley Pipeline:
Restoring the right-of-way,
protecting resources
A
t the start of 2022, total project work on the
Mountain Valley Pipeline was nearly 94 percent
complete.
This included all work on the project's three compressor
stations and four interconnect facilities. More than 270
miles of pipe had been welded and laid in the trench at
least three feet underground. More than half of the 303mile
route in Virginia and West Virginia had been fully
restored.
Project crew members have worked diligently with state
and federal regulators to ensure this critical infrastructure
is built safely and responsibly. Permanent restoration
to pre-construction conditions remains the best way
to protect natural resources and guard against erosion
and sedimentation on the right-of-way, and crews and
landowners alike are eager for work on the remaining
sections to be completed.
The photos accompanying this report show how the fully
restored right-of-way is maintained as a green space that,
in many instances, blends naturally with the surrounding
area. Markers are installed along the right-of-way to ensure
the public knows about the pipeline's presence.
Mountain Valley continues to target a summer 2022 date
for the project to start transporting natural gas to residents
and businesses in the Roanoke Valley and across the
eastern United States. Roanoke Gas Company will receive
natural gas at two taps - in Montgomery and Franklin
counties - to meet the region's growing needs.
Once completed, the Mountain Valley Pipeline will become
an integral part of our nation's lower-carbon energy
infrastructure network, providing affordable, domestic
natural gas to meet public demand. Mountain Valley
also looks forward to maintaining strong community
relationships, helping to promote economic development
and job creation, and generating important new annual tax
revenue to support core public services like public safety,
education and transportation for decades to come.
