Mer de Corail : la protection en marche
favorisé la délimitation de 27 000 km² de réserves
intégrales, dont l'accès est totalement interdit.
Le plateau de Chesterfield et des Bellona ainsi que
les atolls d'Entrecasteaux sont des lieux de ponte
majeurs dans le Pacifique pour les tortues vertes,
et les oiseaux marins nodis brun et noir, puffins du
Pacifique, fous bruns et masqués. Les eaux des plateaux sont également une zone de reproduction des
baleines à bosse.
Des partenariats de suivis scientifiques de long

terme ont été signés avec l'Institut de recherche
pour le développement de Nouméa et l'université
de la Nouvelle Calédonie. La pêche professionnelle
est limitée aux seuls navires calédoniens. 19 thoniers y pratiquent une pêche durable de thons
blancs et jaunes. Les pêcheurs sont les premières
vigies du parc dont les eaux riches en poisson
peuvent susciter des convoitises. Pour renforcer la
protection de ces eaux, le Parc travaille aujourd'hui
sur un programme de surveillance par satellite.

Avec ses 1,3 millions de km², le Parc naturel de la mer
de Corail, créé en 2014, est grand comme la moitié de la Méditerranée. Son périmètre commence
à 12 milles nautiques des côtes de la Nouvelle
Calédonie et s'étend jusqu'à 200 milles au large.
La diversité des milieux est extrême : archipels, récifs
coralliens et plus de 500 monts sous-marins, cohabitent avec la fosse des Nouvelles-Hébrides, la plus
profonde des eaux françaises, à 7 919 m.
