PARLER DU PASSÉ
Quelques rappels grammaticaux : les temps du passé.

Attention, en anglais comme en français, il existe plusieurs façons d'exprimer
le passé : prétérit, present perfect et pluperfect. Néanmoins, ces temps ne sont
pas interchangeables :
- le prétérit exprime une action passée et terminée, et souvent datée.
I ate a sandwich for lunch today = J'ai mangé un sandwich au déjeuner.
I visited New York last summer = J'ai visité New York l'été dernier.
- le present perfect (HAVE + V + EN) exprime une action passée qui a une incidence sur le moment présent. Ce temps ne peut être associé à une date figée et
donc révolue, mais est souvent associé à une durée dans le temps.
I have eaten too much = J'ai trop mangé (j'ai mal au ventre).
I have been to New York = Je suis allé(e) à New York (j'en ai gardé d'excellents
souvenirs).
- le pluperfect équivaut au plus-que-parfait et s'utilise avec HAD et un participe
passé.
I had eaten too many sandwiches to be able to eat dessert! = J'avais mangé trop
de sandwichs pour pouvoir manger le dessert !
I hadn't been to New York before = Je n'étais jamais allé(e) à New York auparavant.

LE DISCOURS INDIRECT : RAPPORTER
LES PAROLES D'AUTRUI
Souvent, lorsqu'on doit effectuer un rapport ou une synthèse, on se trouve
contraint de rapporter les paroles d'autrui. S'en suit alors une pénible épreuve :
vous savez bien qu'il faut modifier certaines données (temps des verbes, pronoms personnels...), mais comment ?

Les temps
Comme en français, lorsqu'on rapporte les paroles de quelqu'un, il faut faire
très attention à la concordance des temps. Ainsi, il est nécessaire de modifier
le temps des verbes utilisés en fonction du temps du verbe introducteur. Les
principaux verbes introducteurs au discours indirect sont say et tell :
Discours direct
"I am reading John's report", He says.

"I'm reading John's report", He said.

"I live in Paris during the week."
"I have already eaten."

Discours indirect

He says that he is reading John's
report.
Rien ne change car le verbe introducteur
(say) est au présent.

He said that he was reading John's
report.
Le verbe introducteur est au prétérit
(said) donc on décale les temps de
tous les autres verbes d'un cran dans
le passé. Ainsi, « am » devient « was ».
She told me that she lived in Paris
during the week.
Le verbe au présent (live) devient prétérit.
He said that he had already eaten.
Le prétérit devient pluperfect pour
marquer l'antériorité dans le passé.
