in Alan Greenspan's era, exuberance is
the mark of the worst kind of amateur.
It's sloppy. Irrational. Gullible. Embarrassing.
Compliance wouldn't like it.
But once you get your pass and find
your way down to Huntington Beach,
the weather and the waves and the
conversation have already been paid for.
You might as well relax, get out there
and participate.
And believe it or not, that's where
the results happen. I spent every waking
minute last year on camera talking to
some of the smartest people I've ever
met, inside or outside the industry.
I was already exhausted from putting
last year's version of this magazine
together. Full disclosure, I thought I
hated print. It rained. I ended up sunburned
anyway.
My boss wrecked some expensive
shoes. I missed my wife's birthday, and
there was hell to pay for that. The fact
that I jumped to show up this year and go
through all that again says it all: worth it.
Totally worth it. If you're willing to
put up with a little rain and risk your
shoes, you're in the right place. Take
every meeting you can.
