GOING BIG
"HOW do you say 'no' to Michael
Barratt*?" was Mark Bogdansky's
response when asked what appealed
to him about working for Auto Care
in late 2016. "Honestly, though, I had
heard great things about him, Bill
Hanvey and the Auto Care Association,
and I was excited about the position."
As senior director, meetings and
events, Mark ensures that Auto
Care's goals are achieved at all the
association's trade show interests.
His priorities are educating the
membership, growing the Auto Care
brand and continuing to cultivate
AAPEX as the place to be for the
automotive aftermarket, in turn
establishing the association as the
go-to organization for the industry.
Mark came to the association
after 11 years at the National Retail
Federation in D.C., and before that,
he began his non-profit career in the
meetings department of a medical
association in Boston. There he
developed his passion for dynamic,
forward-thinking sessions, events
and attendee experiences.
"In 2002, we had a keynote
presentation where a doctor virtually
performed a heart procedure from
Boston on a patient in Italy," said
Mark. "It was incredible. I enjoy pushing
the envelope with what we can do
with sessions, trying to educate for
tomorrow as well as for today."
One of Mark's biggest pushes
for AAPEX has been to focus on the

future. The three new morning keynote
sessions at AAPEX 2017 are about
tomorrow's technology for the vehicle,
buyer and shop. Additionally, Mark is
excited about the debut of Mobility Park
at this year's show, a 20,000-squarefoot area in the parking lot behind the
Sands Expo, focused on education.
"Mobility Park is a new extension
of AAPEX," said Mark. "There will be
under-hood technician training, electric
cars, battery technology, electronic
parking brakes, Tesla training and ADAS
crash avoidance systems. We are also
launching the Technology Intersection,
where OEs showing technology that
won't be in the aftermarket for three
years, including virtual reality features
and more. It's where people will go
to see the future of our industry."
Mark holds a BA in math and
business from Yeshiva University in
Washington Heights, N.Y., and has
worked as a high school math and
physics teacher in New Jersey, as well
as a high school, college and semiprofessional basketball coach in the
U.S. and Israel. Mark has been married
to his wife Heidi for 13 years, and
they have a six-year-old son named
Ryan, who is the "happiest kid ever."
When not working, Mark loves
music, reading non-fiction and
biographies, and is a self-described
"sports fanatic." Fortunately for the
industry and his colleagues, he
brings his A-game into the Auto
Care Association every day too.
