WHO IS USING OEM WEBSITES? Almost half of the shops reported purchasing or subscribing to OEM service information websites. These websites offer factory service information and are the only way to reprogram replacement and/or update computer modules on vehicles. OEMs closely protect their code for the modules and require shops to use a pass-through reprogrammer that transfers the protected data from the OEM's website to the module via the technician's computer. OEMs charge shops by the hour, day and even by the VIN for access. Short-term access can cost as little as $10 for a 72-hour period to as much as $44 per hour, depending on the make of the vehicle. If a shop does a significant volume of a specific make, they can purchase an annual subscription which can cost anywhere from $700 to $8,000 a year. Established 1920. REINVENTED EVERY DAY.
