I n April, I was invited to represent the League of American Bicyclists at the Moscow International Cycling Congress (MICC2016) in Russia. Over 150 Russian bike advocates from almost 30 different cities were in attendance, along with an impressive group of expert speakers from all over the globe. The conference organizers brought in the League because the Bicycle Friendly America program provides a useful tool not just for American communities, businesses and universities, but as a great model for bike advocates abroad to inspire change in their own communities. On the final day of the conference, the event's co-organizer, Russian bike activist Vladimir Kumov excitedly announced to the audience that his organization, Let's bike it!, had translated the Bicycle Friendly America applications into Russian and would be establishing a similar program there in Jennifer Dill of Portland Moscow. I cheered along with the audience, because State University, Amelia Neptune of League of I've seen first-hand how the Bicycle Friendly AmeriAmerican Bicyclists, ca program has helped transform so many places here Darya Efimenko of FES in the U.S., and I know it has the potential to do the Moscow, and Paula Bisiau, same in Russia. Jennifer's account of courtesy of Paula Bisiau. the similarities between the Russian bicycle activists we met in Moscow and American bike advocates back home is so true-I saw the same passion and demands that you see from advocates at the National Bike Summit or at any local bike summit here in the U.S. I share Jennifer's optimism that Moscow is well on its way to becoming more bicycle friendly, and I'm excited to see how the Bicycle Friendly America program can play a part in bringing about some of that change. -Amelia Neptune, Bicycle Friendly America Program Manager, League of American Bicyclists BICYCLE FRIENDLY AMERICA 11
