Bicycle Friendly America Fall 2016 - 25

ยป MAPPING A PATH TO BICYCLE FRIENDLY BUSINESS STATUS He said that by giving these bicycles to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford them, and getting to know them, these elected officials are "able to start putting actual faces to these people and start realizing they're really no different than anyone else. They all want their kids to grow up safe and successful. They're all trying to put food on the table for their families. When you allow people to be part of the process, you allow them to be part of the change, and it seems to be pretty transformative." Hallyburton explained that so many bike co-ops put so much emphasis on being a part of the counter culture that they don't participate in some of the more mainstream events, adding to the underrepresentation of bicycle co-ops at important functions like the National Bike Summit. He explained that there is a sense of exclusivity that comes with this emphasis on counter culture that can scare away many community members. "One of the things we really try to do is make sure that everybody who walks in our doors, whether they're a refugee that just came over here from Nigeria, or somebody who just got out of prison, or somebody who is working on a four thousand dollar triathlon bike, that when they It's exciting to see a thriving, established bike co-op like the BBP be awarded Platinum level Bicycle Friendly Business for a second time. But how did they get to this point? Several years ago the BBP applied and received Gold status. Hallyburton said that it was a good learning experience. " The Bicycle Friendly Business [program] really gives you a pretty broad map of what you're doing and what you can do. Because it's both the application process and once you get your award 'this is what you're doing well, and this is what you can improve.'" Hallyburton admits that the application process can be confusing, even for a bike co-op, if you don't understand some of the examples listed. He explained that sometimes business owners don't even realize they already have some of these elements in place because they are not familiar with these terms. However, Hallyburton said that calling the Bicycle Friendly America staff at the League helped him successfully complete the application. Now that he has gone through the process, he goes to other local businesses, encouraging them to apply for Bicycle Friendly Business status and helping them with the application process. Receiving Platinum status "really gave us the ability to help encourage other businesses to follow our path. We spend a lot of time going into businesses, talking about why it's important to be bicycle friendly, talking about the kids we donate bicycles to and telling these business that 'when you encourage your employees to ride and they ride to work there is a safety in numbers effect." He explained that as more people start to ride to work, drivers become more accustomed to bicycles and it becomes a safer riding environment for their co-workers, as well the children they donate bicycles to. "We went on a quest a few years ago to try to get more bicycle friendly businesses in Boise than any other city in the country, and for a while we were actually tied with Pittsburgh." He went on to explain that the BBP went around to many local businesses not only to encourage them to apply, but with the businesses whose employees had a strong interest in walking or biking to work, he challenged them to reach a higher status than their local competitors. He explained that one of these businesses grew large enough to seek out a bigger facility. "When they changed locations, one of the top things they were looking for was a place that was easy for their employees to bike to work. So then they bought a place right on the Boise Green Belt, which is a bicycle highway of sorts that runs up along the river." Hallyburton went on to explain that bike advocacy is something that sometimes comes less easily to many business owners, but can make a big impact on how bicycle friendly they are. He said that while "infrastructure is important, like bike racks and other things" many businesses "think only about infrastructure, they think only about money and they sometimes overlook things that don't necessarily cost any money at all. Like 'how can we let our employees know that it's National Bike to Work Week?'" They can also promote other events like #carfreeforbbp day, even having employees set up a bike-to-lunch event within the company. He went on to explain that it might be a matter of having one employee researching local events and encouraging their co-workers to attend local bicycle events. Hallyburton later explained that education and advocacy are easy costeffective ways to promote bike culture in the workplace, as well as a great way to improve their rating as a Bicycle Friendly Business with the League of American Bicyclists.
