Bicycle Friendly America Summer 2017 - 5
MAX HEPP-BUCHANAN
TORRANCE STRONG
I am very excited to represent locally based bike advocacy efforts on the Board of Directors of the nation's oldest bike advocacy organization. Though I am brand new to the League of
American Bicyclists and will be serving with seasoned veterans,
I am joining the Board of Directors with strong opinions about
the future of bike advocacy in America.
I am committed to protecting federal funding for biking and
walking infrastructure and to helping Congress pass pro-biking
and pro-walking policies. In
addition to proper education
and encouragement, infrastructure is incredibly important and many communities
depend on state and federal
funding sources to build that
infrastructure. I want to help
you advocate for the growth
of "all-ages-and-abilities"
bikeways such as protected
bike lanes, multi-use trails,
and safe neighborhood
streets by ensuring that the
federal government continues to recognize biking and
walking as normal forms of
transportation and invests in
it accordingly. Not every cyclist needs or wants this type of protected infrastructure, but if we are going to grow the number of
people who get to experience the joy of riding in our country,
we need safe and accessible infrastructure for everybody.
I will also work with the League staff to help support and
promote the grassroots advocacy efforts of state and local organizations. Your advocacy work in your community is where the
rubber meets the road, and we want to make sure you keep the
rubber side down!
Thank you for electing me to the Board of the League. We
will work hard for you, and I encourage you to reach out to me
with your priorities for a Bicycle Friendly America.
Hello members, please accept this as my official "Thanks for
the vote of confidence!!!"
Everyday that I am able to ride my bicycle brings about a
new adventure and a greater appreciation for life. I can ride the
same route repeatedly, and there is always something new that
catches my eye.
I am a lifelong cyclist, and I have used my bicycle in almost
every aspect possible. One of my main goals as a Board Member is to always remember the
individuals that have no other
option for transportation.
Educating motorists as well
as cyclists is very important
when it comes to laws and
how they impact our daily
lives.
When new ideas are formulated and new policies
created, it's easy to overlook
safe cycling infrastructure for
communities of all income
levels. Of course, increasing
membership is at the forefront, but I want new members to know that they have a
voice that matters, and there
is an ear ready to listen. I also feel it is very important to have an
organization that resembles the demographic they represent.
My vision for the future of the League is to been seen as the
number one go-to space for all people and all things cycling related. Our members have a wealth of knowledge, and I am eager
to tap into that. I will be traveling the country participating in
various member cycling events. I am looking forward to sitting
in on club meetings, attending state conferences, co-teaching
with other League Cycling Instructors and getting miles in
whenever possible.
