ensuring that our bicycle commuters can
make it home safely.
TMBA has branched into the bicycle
infrastructure advocacy arena as well.
Local governments and the local RTC
have installed an impressive number of
bike lane miles in the last few years, but
generally they are relying on paint. Many
of the existing bike lanes are disconnected and have been installed opportunis-

tically (some were just the low hanging
fruit and others were more along the
lines of "let's just put this bike lane in
while we're re-paving"). This has created
a scenario where finding a bike lane is actually pretty easy, but finding a series of
bike lanes to get you where you want to
go is more difficult. Additionally, there is
a portion of the population who do not
feel safe enough with white stripe bike

lanes to choose a bicycle as their mode of
transportation. These potential riders are
looking for more intentionally separated
bike routes to use. Right now, TMBA is
working with the City of Reno and the
RTC to spearhead the installation of
north and south-bound protected bike
lanes between the University of Nevada,
Reno and MidTown Reno (a local hub
of all things cool and artsy). We have
support from national partners like Patagonia, the Renaissance Hotel, Hawley
USA, and Quality Bicycle Products as
well as a number of local businesses who
recognize that improving local transportation corridors for cyclists and pedestrians will boost their business. TMBA is
aware that this project is being proposed
in the context of a motor vehicle-based
society and a community that values
parking spaces over almost everything
else. TMBA hopes to provide a design
alternative that preserves parking and
demonstrates that if you build truly adequate bicycle infrastructure, people will
actually choose to ride.
TMBA is an entirely volunteer run
organization that relies on coordination with amazing local partners and the
drive of individuals from the community.
Most of TMBA's time, effort, and fundraising (as minimal as it is) go toward
supporting a range of events during
Bike Week every year. TMBA is run as
an individual nonprofit with the Nevada
Bicycle Coalition being its fiduciary
