An NCC and Hagerty Virtual Event:

" State of the BMW Collector Car Market "

n October 1st, 2020, the
National Capital Chapter (NCC)
teamed up with one of its
newest sponsors, Hagerty, to bring
BMW CCA members a virtual event
taking a closer look at the state of the
BMW collector car market. To kick off
the event NCC's President, Paul Seto,
spoke about our chapter and then
introduced the panelists from Hagerty:
Dave Kinney and Greg Ingold.
Dave Kinney, an Accredited
Senior Appraiser and Publisher of the
Hagerty Price Guide, is well-versed
regarding BMWs and has owned
hundreds of collector vehicles. Greg
Ingold, an Associate Editor of the
Hagerty Price Guide, knows the BMW
market well and manages Hagerty's
transactional database. Over the
course of the hour-long event,

Hagerty's valuation experts, Dave and
Greg, picked specific cars to discuss
and provided valuable insight into the
past, present, and future of our
favorite marque, BMW.
The image of the E30 M3 used
to publicize this event (and which
also serves as this article's title
image) is fitting given their increase
in value over the past decade. We all
have stories about the car that got
away, myself included. In 2005, I
passed on the opportunity to buy a
clean E30 M3 for less than $10,000.
Now decent " drivers " sell for five
times that, and a pristine, lowmileage example fetched $250,000
earlier this year (2020). So whether
you're looking for the right time to
buy a car you love or you're looking
for a good investment candidate,

getting advice from the experts like
Dave and Greg of Hagerty will only
help you make a better decision.
The first car discussed was the
BMW i8. Dave explained that a
" collector car " no longer solely
means that it's over 25 years old;
it now includes cars that are out of
production or " really interesting "
regardless of their age. He would
have one in an " outrageous color " .
Greg commented that the i8 appeals
to the " younger crowd " and is a " cool
alternative to a Tesla. "
Next up was the BMW Z1
(1990). Dave's reasoning for this
selection being that only 8,000 were
made, they have drop-down doors,
the Z1 has an unconventional design,
and they were not originally sold in
the U.S. He categorized Z1s as

" beach cars " , which are currently hot
in the marketplace. Greg pointed out
that the Z1 has a lot of conversation
potential and if you pull into a car
show you can be assured no one else
will have one. He said, " It's the
perfect RADwood car. "
The BMW Z3 (1994-2002)
followed the Z1 discussion. Dave
said these are " much more serious
than people give them credit for " and
that they are " serious fun to drive. "
As with any car, he recommended
buying from a club member or enthusiast that knows proper maintenance
and/or has taken it to a BMW specialist shop. Greg compared the Z3 price
increases to those of the Miata - " if
you like the Miata, but want the BMW
experience... "
