President'sMessage
Who would have thought this pandemic would have lasted this long?! It seems like
the hundredth week of staying in the house and doing nothing but eating and
watching TV. Like everyone else, I'm ready to go out and play with cars! Maybe by
the time you read this everything will be winding down and we will have some
summer remaining to enjoy. In the meantime, we've been having a great time trying
to make the best of the situation by going online. Our chapter had a fantastic time with
James Clay and Phil Wurz of BimmerWorld in our first ever virtual tech session using
Zoom. In addition, we offered our members a virtual open house to become more
familiar with all of NCC's benefits, programs, and events. Finally, we started the
first ever BMW CCA iRacing league! For those who think iRacing is just kids playing
video games, think again. Simulation racing has taken over traditional motorsports.
The best drivers in the world from F1 to IMSA to IndyCar have been competing online,
and now our club members are racing hard, too. iRacing benefits from a full-blown
cockpit setup featuring a steering wheel, pedals, race seat, a huge monitor, and the
best PC/video card you can afford, but you can "drive" using a video-game controller.
While the graphics are incredible, it's the driving and competition that lure our
members to simulated racing. I encourage anyone wishing to participate to get an
iRacing subscription, acquire the associated hardware, and join the fun! We have had
everyone from newbies to professional instructors drop in for our Thursday evening
league, so why not you too?
Speaking of racing, it's a shame the F1 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal was
canceled as that usually serves as the start of summertime fun for me each year.
Montreal is such a great city and having F1 in town makes it even more special,
but no such luck this year. As of now, our BMW CCA car corral at VIR in August is
still on the schedule, but there's been no word as to whether spectators will be allowed
at the race. To get my race fix, I'm hoping to make it to Petit LeMans and the F1 US
Grand Prix later in the year, as many racing series have tightly packed the fall with
overlapping, rescheduled events. As much as I would love to go to Daytona and
Sebring to re-start the summer IMSA season, Florida in July is just... not my thing.
Hopefully squeezed in-between the fall races, Oktoberfest is still scheduled for
September in Palm Springs, CA. Mike Renner of the BMW Performance Center has
promised us an amazing time at Thermal and I plan to take him up on that.
Rumor has it that there's an M4 GT4 event that could take place, and there's no way
I'm missing out on driving a real race car!
If you've been lucky like me, being able to work from home during this
pandemic, you probably have a ton of paid time off (PTO) to use for the rest of the year.
With all the upcoming fun stuff that I mentioned above, I'm sure you'll know where
I'll be... dropping that PTO balance down to zero!
