to have the characteristics you're looking for. If I had to boil the selection
process down, I'd suggest asking the best drivers in your group what they
use, whether it generates shareable logs, and whether they'd be willing to
share their data with you if you get a compatible system.
My inquiries with colleagues and my searches returned the following
results:
Solostorm

Be sure to read the "Analysis Features" section. This one seems to
check all the boxes. Pat G prefers it, though he says that it's more
complicated to use than some other choices.

The onboard data acquisition system or app should also have the
following characteristics:
* Overlays video and data together in the same display, so you
can see what was happening and when during your run.
* Includes a course map, so you can see what was happening and
where during your run.
* Integrates the data into the course map itself, to make it easy to
see what was happening and where. For example, some apps draw your lap
using a green line when you're accelerating and a red line when you're
decelerating. Some even show your car's speed before and after every
corner.
* Uses a high-speed GPS receiver. (You need to record location data several
times per second, not once every several seconds).
* Uses an accelerometer (to determine acceleration, deceleration, and
lateral G forces). Believe it or not, most modern smartphones contain an
accelerometer.
* Is compatible with your smartphone so you can review and analyze
the data on the spot, not after the event is over.
* Easy to use and easy to interpret, so you can quickly figure out what to do
differently on your next run.
* Collects data from your car's OBD computer, such as engine RPM.
* Fits your budget.
* Generates logs that are shareable with colleagues (and can be
overlaid and reviewed together) such that you can compare your run to a
better driver's run.
Being able to compare the data from your run with a better, faster
driver's data is essential to figuring out what to do differently. If you're
fortunate enough to have Brian or David or Josh or Mark or Mike or Pat or
Tommy share their data with you, so you can compare your runs side-byside, you'll see where they're accelerating longer and harder than you are,
braking differently than you are, cornering harder, getting back onto the gas
sooner, staying closer to the cones and running a tighter line.
There are a number of systems available on the market; I won't even
attempt to do a detailed assessment here, though I will mention a few.
Google "best data acquisition system for autocross or track day." For each
system, Google it by itself and change the Google results display to
"images." That way you can quickly ascertain visually which systems seem

choice, easier to use, and less expensive than SoloStorm.

Apex Pro Track Coach

Josh R recommends this one for track day, and Josh has been kicking my
butt on the track for years. Maybe it's the data acquisition system. ; )
Racepak Vantage CL1

It's a little pricey, but it is designed for both autocross and track-day.
Race Chrono

This one was popular on many web forums. It's a bit pricey, but sometimes
you get what you pay for.
