suggested that maybe we ought to
do this regularly and even create a
league. Brian Hair was encouraged
to head up the Karting League
and we were off and running. This
would have been in the early 2000s.
After some years, Brian indicated
he'd like to continue racing, but
didn't want to be the organizer for
the activity. With that, he nominated
me as his replacement. As usual
there were no other candidates, so
I got the position.

are the goals of Karting?)

BMWs we passed and usually saw
smiling faces returning the recognition. The BMW community was
much smaller in those days, but
many of the activities were in their
beginnings. We attended races
back in those days just like we do
now, going to Watkins Glen for the
Six Hours and the F1 race in the fall.
We went to Lime Rock and Mid Ohio
regularly. I can't forget friends from
those days, Rick and Denise Price
as well as Dave Roach, who caravanned and traveled with us on
many occasions. I took photos at
those races much like I do now.

event, but came along to try it out
later. It was after a few years of
Super Bowl races before someone

Steve: Karting was the only truly
head-to-head competitive program
supported by the NCC. We've also
got Sim Racing now. We aren't in
BMWs, but we do race. There is
racecraft to learn and real passing
on the track. It's a fun, competitive
program where many good friendships were created. We typically
ran ten races indoors from
December to March accumulating
points towards a championship.
In the winter, the chapter didn't have
many activities, so Karting got a lot
of attention. On a Sunday afternoon
we frequently had 30 people attend

to race in three heats of ten racers.
We were always looking for ways to
make it more interesting, from track
variations to team races, 40-lap
long-distance races and randomly
seeded heat races. Once the
Karting League race season was
completed, we continued racing
every other weekend throughout the
year just for the fun and competition. Unfortunately, in the summer
of 2015 Allsports Grand Prix went
out of business in a dispute over
their property lease rate. We also
raced on occasion at Summit Point
Kart, both at Summit Point and at
RFK stadium, but that business
went defunct as well. We weren't
able to restructure a competitive
league until 2020 at United Karting
at BWI. Despite starting late in the
year due to COVID-19, we got in all
but one of the dates we had
planned. We are making plans with
United Karting to continue in 2021.
dB: What do you like best about
your involvement with Karting?
Steve: The racing competition
Karting provides is special in its
reality and in the friendships that it
brings about between the competi-

dB: How did you first come to be
involved with Karting?
Steve: The NCC Karting program
began as a social activity on Super
Bowl Sunday, indoor Karting at
Allsports Grand Prix in Sterling,
Virginia. I didn't attend the first
