President'sMessage
This is always a frigid and weird time of the year in the DMV, but as I write this in
mid-January, the winter has been mild so far: no snow, above average temperatures, and with a few cars & coffee events continuing through the winter weather.
I'm still able to wash the cars outside and my winter tires haven't been tested much
with sub-freezing temps or black ice. I'm sure the worst has yet to come, but I
know that car season is just around the corner regardless. During the off-season,
the club's volunteers have been planning another year of great events. While
delivery of the COVID vaccine slowly makes its way around, we've tweaked a few
things to make sure that we get back to some level of normalcy. We kick things
off in March with our Dust Off Tour and April brings the beginning of both the
autocross and HPDE seasons. Since these events all take place outdoors, they are
COVID-friendly, and we'll take the necessary steps to ensure social distancing. We
also opened registration for our ///M Club Day events at the BMW Performance
Center; these track days are true bucket-list items, so hopefully you can attend
this year. Also during April, I will be leading a DC caravan to Greenville, SC for
BMW CCA's MX1 Enthusiasts weekend. Packed with great events at the BMW
Performance Center, BMW CCA Foundation, and the BMW CCA Headquarters, this
is a great spring getaway for all club members, so I hope to see you there!
Believe it or not, this issue also marks the one-year anniversary of the dB
going fully digital. Back during the planning phase, we were nervous about how
the change would be received by membership, and I'm proud to say that people
love it! We've had great feedback from readers, other chapters, and sponsors, and
it's been great for NCC financially. In a year where we had events cut due to
COVID, the print savings really helped increase our cash reserves. Eventually,
those dollars will go back to membership in the form of more events and benefits,
so rest assured that the dB will live on and continue to be the best magazine of all
CCA chapters. Plus, aren't you glad that you don't have an ever-growing stack of
newsletters taking up space in your home?
Finally, let me announce an organizational change within our HPDE program.
For the past few years, longtime member, Gordon Kimpel, has been our Driving
School Steering Committee (DSSC) chairman, leading a group of incredible
instructors, students, and team members. Thanks for all your leadership and
contributions, Gordon! While he's stepping down from being top dog, he'll still
be heavily involved running our outstanding HPDEs. Hardcore track veteran,
instructor, and former registrar, Joe Geadrities, has stepped up to lead the DSSC,
and brings a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm to the team. Congrats, Joe, we
look forward to another great year on the track! This club couldn't exist without
great volunteers like Gordon, Joe, and the rest of the HPDE gang, we appreciate
everything you do for us!
