instructor for guidance.
Leave traction control and
stability control ON. Leave Sport
mode off (the throttle response is too
aggressive.) Inform your instructor of
any other computer aids (lane assist,
automatic emergency braking) that
your car may have. Stay out of the
banking on the Karussel turn on
Summit Point's Shenandoah Circuit.
Banked turns tend to drive stability
control systems bonkers (not good).
Remember the three primary rules of
track day. 1) Be safe. Help us keep
you and your car safe: do as your
instructor says. If you and your
instructor don't see eye-to-eye, then
talk to the Chief Instructor. 2) Learn
something. 3) Have fun.
What should I expect to learn?
Your day will be a combination of
classroom, skidpad training, and ontrack sessions. The first four basic
lessons are the following:

1. Looking ahead and thinking
ahead are the foundational
skills to successful motorsports. The car goes where the
driver is looking. You should be
looking about two seconds in front
of the car, just like you do on the
highway.
2. Corners - enter slow and
exit fast. Yes, you're going to
need to slow down in order to make
that corner. Do your heaviest braking while the car is in a straight line.
Your tires' grip cannot support
maximum braking while turning at
the same time.
3. Corners - positioning the
car. Which is easier to traverse fast,
a " gentle " corner or a sharp corner?
Our objective is to position the car at
the corner's entry so as to make the
corner as " gentle " as possible.
Enter wide, brake, then turn

and drive close to the curbing
on the inside of the corner (the
" apex " ). Let the curbing be your
guide. The curbing (often painted
with red and white stripes) is your
friend. Drive to the curbing and
touch it (don't smack it) with your
front tire. Next, as you smoothly
accelerate out of the corner, let the
car's momentum carry you back to
the outside of the track. (Let the car
" track out " .) SEE THE DIAGRAMS,
BELOW.
4. Smooth is fast (and smooth
is safe). Jerky, abrupt inputs,
whether throttle or brakes or steering, unsettle the car and can result in
losing control and having an
" incident " .
Track etiquette
When entering the track from the pit
area, stay on the same side as you
entered the track until you pass the

first corner. In the middle of a session, if you leave the pit area to reenter the track, faster traffic already
on the track will expect you to stay
on the side from which you left the
pit area until you pass the first turn.
Situation awareness
You're sharing the track, so be aware
of who's around you. Check your
mirrors. Let faster cars go by (point
them by). (Your instructors will
teach you when and where and how.)
Also, glance at the flaggers as you
go by each station. When they wave
a flag, they're trying to tell you
something.
Flags: What does each one
mean?
Green means " go " . Passing is
allowed on the straights, with a
point by.
Yellow - not waving (standing
yellow): caution, there's an incident up ahead, off the pavement. No
passing until you pass the incident.
Yellow - waving: extreme caution, there's an incident up ahead,
ON the pavement. No passing until
you pass the incident.
Blue flag - a faster car is overtaking you. Point them by.
