footed the bill to ship it to me in
Maryland. The car already had a salvage title (due to the former owner
hitting the wall at Laguna Seca in it);
it was used by the previous owners
as a track car for over 10 years.
dB: How did you come to be so
involved in NCC autocross?
Fraser: My first autocross event was
with NCC, and every other club I
have driven with since then hasn't
provided the experience, fun and
value that NCC does. I quickly
started gravitating towards NCC's
events as my priority and became
more involved from there. My
involvement as a member of the
NCC Autocross Committee began
when the prior Chairman, Phil
Yates, asked me if I would like to
help as a novice coordinator, and it
snowballed from there.

dB: What tips could you share with
drivers who are new to autocross?
Fraser: Come out early and often.
Acquiring seat-time is the best
classroom. Jump into other people's cars for ride-alongs, and ask
people to ride along in your car
and seek out their advice. Most
autocrossers are extremely generous with their knowledge and time
and are willing to help by passing
on their knowledge and skills to
anyone who asks.
dB: What next-step tips would
you share with intermediate
autocrossers?
Fraser: Continue to seek out advice
from the 'fast' drivers at events, and
start reading books on theory and
skills of autocross. Ross Bentley
has compiled a book on autocross,

for example. These books will help
you formulate a game-plan for each
event - what am I looking for in the
course-walk? How can I visualize
the course before I drive it? What
should I be focusing on in my selfevaluation(s)?

pressure or having to back off.
Find that balance, and aim to
execute that ideal input every time
(easier said than done).

dB: And how about advanced
autocrossers who are seeking to
squeeze out those last few tenths of
a second?

Fraser: Come out and drive. Every
driver gains something from
participating in an autocross (even if
it is as simple as 'this isn't for me').
I hope to see everyone who is reading this participate in a future
autocross as your schedule allows.

Fraser: Make an effort to identify
what extra driving inputs (brakes,
throttle, or steering) could be eliminated and/or sped up. Think about
whether you are turning-in too hard
and need to dial back out 5-10
degrees of steering angle when you
feel the car "push". Think about
whether you are braking too gently
or too firmly and then find yourself
having to apply more braking

dB: Any other advice you'd like to
share with dB's readers?

dB: Thanks for your time!
Fraser: You're welcome.
