the Z4 twin-turbo inline six,
benchmark BMW 6-speed manual
shifter, 1 Series mechanical steering
linkage and light and tight chassis
coupled with the M3 differential, M3
rear suspension, M3 brakes, M3
wheels, and M3 tires made the 1M a
blast to drive. Most of the buff book
reviews declared the 1M to be as
close to being the spiritual
descendant of the 2002 tii as one
could get.
However, there was something
about the 2011 M3's high-revving,
naturally aspirated V-8, coupled with
the 7-speed DCT, that seduced all
who drove it. Hence, Alaa built his
1M to have the underpinnings of a
1M, but WITH the M3's V-8 and the
7-speed DCT, tuned to M3 GTS
specifications.
In order to do this, he first had
to find a donor vehicle. From
experience, I know that BMWs that
were "totaled" in collisions usually
have many great parts to salvage. As
an example, anyone who had
purchased my totaled 2012 135i
convertible would have had an
outstanding powertrain, suspension,
brakes, wheels, and interior. To start
his project, Alaa purchased a

"totaled" BMW M3 convertible.
And that is when I first learned
about this project. During my daily
walks with my dog, I noticed a
salvaged M3 convertible parked
in the driveway of a house in my
neighborhood. There was a
significant amount of body damage,
especially to the driver's side. Not
surprisingly, the interior was intact.
My thoughts were that this vehicle
would either be turned into a race
car, or perhaps repaired to be a
personal car.
As days went by, during those

daily dog walks I noticed that that M3
was now in the garage. As the
drivetrain, rear end, wheels, and
chassis components were removed,
it became apparent that this M3 was
not to be resurrected.
When a 135i M-sport appeared
in his driveway, the objectives for
that M3 became clear to me: Alaa
was building his 1M. Or as he likes
to call it, an E82 M3.
Anyone who has participated in
our DIY events appreciates the
sophistication of modern BMWs.
As true electromechanical machines,

repair and maintenance on today's
BMW requires a fair amount of
comprehensive training. Hence, it
would be reasonable to assume that
the skill and patience required to
remove the drivetrain, rear subframe,
suspension and other chassis
subsystems from an M3 and install
them in a 1 Series is most likely
beyond that of the average backyard
mechanic.
Alaa earned his BMW
mechanical expertise in one of the
most effective ways. Being a High
Performance Driving Education
(HPDE) participant from an early
age, he quickly learned that he could
either pay a shop to repair and
maintain his car, or learn how to do it
himself and use the money he saved
toward paying for the next event,
modifications to his vehicle, or a new
set of tires.
Due to the resulting wider track,
both the front and the rear fenders
were modified to have the "1M" look.
A carbon-fiber hood, with some of
the slickest hood pin mechanisms
that I've ever seen, as well as
aggressive carbon-fiber front air
diverters and a carbon-fiber rear
diffuser give Alaa's 1M a smooth,
