hile some club activities
and events have been postponed or rescheduled due
to the pandemic, the NCC BMW CCA
golf outing was held as scheduled on
Saturday, July 18th at Raspberry
Falls. Fortunately, golf has social
distancing built-in: it is played outdoors, it is easy to stay six feet apart,
and our hosting golf club offered
individuals their own carts if they
desired (fun fact - Raspberry Falls
has seen the number of rounds
played this year stay steady yearover-year, but their cart usage has
increased by over 300%). Thirtyseven golfers participated, hosted
again by BMW CCAer, PGA Pro, and
all-around excellent guy, Willy Lutz.
After a quick check-in, an obligatory waiver signing (NCC, not
COVID), and retrieving a few sleeves
of free golf balls (blue, orange, and
yellow were popular this year -
surprisingly, the Kirkland brand was
not as hot), golfers chatted at a safe
distance, warmed up, and prepared
for the day's outing. As usual, warming up was not an issue as Willy and

NCC President, Paul Seto, have a
long and glorious track record of
choosing incredibly hot days for
these outings. The good news is that
while it was hot (96 degrees midday), it was not humid and not nearly as nasty as Sunday, which featured
a heat index over 105 degrees.
As in previous years, players
were divided into Competitive (eight
groups) and Social (three) flights.
There were prizes for Low Gross,
Longest Drive, and Closest to the
Pin. Just before starting, Willy

briefed the assembled crew on procedures for the day, protocol, and
cart rules. On the last item, he spent
an inordinate amount of time
explaining the 90-degree rule.
Basically, you drive on the cart path
until you are perpendicular to your
ball (although Willy said parallel -
Euclid he is not), drive straight to
your ball at 90 degrees to the cart
path, hit, and then return to the path.
This will become important in a
minute.
I was happy to be grouped with

Willy and Paul and we headed off to
the 6th tee where our round would
begin. On the way there, for some
reason, Willy left the cart path and
drove diagonally across the 3rd fairway, violating the rule he had just
carefully detailed, moving to the front
of the procession of carts. I am not
sure if he was in a hurry, had to be
first, or just wanted to save time, but
I was not going to let him beat me to
#6 so when I had the chance on #4,
I drove across (at 90 degrees of
course), cut off Willy, and restored
the natural order of the universe.
Speaking of Willy, after learning
some fun facts and tidbits while playing with him last year, I figured a
reprise was in order. So here are Fun
Willy Facts v2.0:
* He drove his recently
restored E34, inherited from his
father, to the outing instead of his
E36 M3. Why? The stereo amplifier
in the M3 was out and Willy hates to
drive without tunes.
* I had known that Willy's dad
was from Switzerland but learned this
year his mom is from Sicily. Or
