post lift for service. There is admittedly
a middle ground where you can
use your garage for both storage and
work, though knowing your objectives
for the space is important. For
example, might you need 220V power
for certain equipment, or would it be
helpful to run air lines that are easily
accessible for tools? Also, epoxy and
polyurea coated floors look nice, but
aren't necessarily ideal for workshops
since they don't hold up well to welding
splatter and sparks from grinding.
As pointed out in the first Virtual
Garage, good light is important.
4) If you've got 'em, drive 'em.
A goal of all our presenters was to
enjoy their BMWs more, which is
enabled by the space their garages
provide to store and work on their
BMWs. Marshall's perspective is that
BMWs are mechanical marvels that
are meant to be driven, not works of
art to be looked at. He makes it a
priority that all his cars see track time.
While doing HPDEs or racing may not
be for everyone, he raises a good

point - as nice as BMWs are to look
at in a garage, a well-designed garage
should ultimately serve the purpose
of allowing one to enjoy their cars
more by driving them.

If you build it, they will
come. A garage/workshop is a
place we store and work on our cars.

Our presenters emphasized the social
aspects of this hobby and what it
means to them. These are spaces
where we come together - whether
the occasion is friends helping each
other out on a project, or parents
sharing hands-on learning opportunities
with their kids. Marshall
observed that it was amazing how
many new car friends you have when
word gets around that you have a lift.
His shop fridge became a de facto
" parking meter " with libation contributions
by lift users. Beyond collaborating
on projects, garages are great
places to watch a race and meet up
with friends to talk cars.
NCC Virtual Garage - Round 2
built on the success of our first event.
We are grateful for John, Tom, and
Marshall generously sharing their
amazing garages/workshops and
passion for BMWs. Also, thanks to
Paul Seto, Mike Bevels, and Doug
Verner for their continued support of
this series.
So, what's next? We plan to host
the next NCC virtual event in the first
half of 2022 to feature more members.
If you have a unique BMW garage
(any type and size will do) and are
willing to share lessons learned,
please let us know. We look forward
to hearing more of your tips, seeing
virtual tours, and coming together
again (virtually) to talk shop in
the garage.
