to Shining Z

Raymond were presented with
that very scenario by renowned
BMW restorer and collector, Lothar
Schuettler. Mike and Jack had initially
connected with Lothar through
introductions made by this club's
group of passionate enthusiasts in
order to see his Pebble-Beachwinning
1937 BMW 328, a car that he
restored himself and which has
graced the cover of Roundel. When
he suggested that Mike and Jack
return to borrow his 1990 Z1 and
2002 Z8 for a weekend, it was an
opportunity that they couldn't pass
up. Lothar joked, " you can compare
the lowest-number Z (the Z1) with the
highest-number Z (the Z8). "
Jack's Reflections
Lothar will tell you, he hates to tell
stories, but he's only kidding. Lothar
loves to tell his stories and he has
more than a few. Lothar invited us to
sit on his patio, have a seltzer, and
listen to a few tales. (And I thought
that I was a storyteller.)
Born in 1941, Lothar came to
these shores from Germany in the fall
of 1968. Since he spoke no English,
but did " speak " cars, his first job here
was as an automotive technician at
VOB. After a time, Lothar advanced to
become the shop foreman and then
the service manager at VOB.
Eventually, Lothar decided that it was
time to branch off on his own and do
things his way, and he founded BMW
Excluservice in Rockville in 1984.
Excluservice has been a thriving auto
service business specializing in
BMWs ever since.
Lothar has a well-deserved
reputation as a restorer of cars.
