of collections of car parts, waiting to
be turned back into cars, that Lothar
has meticulous attention to organization
and detail. He makes sure that
every task is done well and done
right.
With the seltzer finished, Lothar
handed us the keys to the Z1 and the
Z8, and we were off for our photo
shoot and our 24 hours with his cars.
Lothar has an effective method
of locating a car when he's in the
January I February
market: he tells his friends (including
BMW Corporation) what he's looking
for. Thus began the quest for a Z1,
the car whose claim to fame is the
drop-down doors (see the photos).
After Lothar put the word out that he
was in the market, a friend called him
to say that such a car was available in
Italy. Lothar asked Raine (his German
friend) to inspect the car so Lothar
could make a decision. Raine reported
back that the car was a mess:
cracked paint and upholstery, broken
windshield, etc., etc. Just kidding,
the friend said. The car was indeed
up to Lothar's standards. Lothar is a
perfectionist. If the car isn't perfect
when he acquires it (he has restored
many a fixer upper) then by golly it'll
be darn near perfect when he's done.
Thus, Lothar acquired the car and
brought it across the Atlantic Ocean
to the shores of the U.S.
As Lothar tells it, his lovely wife
Gretchen's only complaint about the
turquoise car with the tan leather
interior was that it wasn't green and
yellow. Sitting in the bar of a restaurant,
Lothar handed her a $100 bill
and said " you need to buy a special
pair of glasses so that it looks green
and yellow to you. " What a character.
Mike barely managed to
squeeze into the Z1 with his knees up
around the steering wheel. That's ok,
he said, that's what he's accustomed
