Let's REALLY Motor

few years ago, a dB reader took me to
task on one of my articles, where the
words drivetrain and powertrain were
used interchangeably. There is a difference;
the drivetrain is what gives the power to
move the wheels, while the powertrain consists
of both the engine and the drivetrain.
However, with the widespread use of frontwheel
drive, where the engine, transmission,
axles, and driveshafts are one unit,
even among the OEMs these terms are used
interchangeably.
This incident proved that dB readers
are much different from the typical car
enthusiast. Their passion and attention to
detail makes contributing to our publication
a pleasure. I suspect that if dB started
a " Letters to the Editor " section in the
magazine it would become a " must-read " for all BMW CCA members -
if the conversations remained civil.

ing slogan " Let's Motor. " Catchy, cute,
and effective, that slogan recaptured the
fun-to-drive spirit of these products. One
of the few " youth-oriented " auto brand
successes, for quite a while the demand
for MINIs exceeded supply.
All youth-oriented brands face the
same issue - keeping themselves fresh for
a " new generation " of youth market as the
current buyer base grows up. For MINI,
they decided to see if they could catch
some of the Tesla " coolness " by going EV.
So, when we received our 2023 MINI
Cooper EV, we knew that now, we could
accurately " motor. "
While used interchangeably, there is
a difference between engine and motor.
Specifically, motors run on electricity and
engines run on combustion. The engine converts various forms of fuels
into mechanical force, while the motor transforms electrical energy into
mechanical energy. And while both motors and engines convert or
