collector car, consider an
online auction site - especially
Bring a Trailer - Activity on
online auction site Bring a Trailer
(BaT) exploded during the pandemic.
According to Bloomberg, " In 2021
the online car auction site sold
$828.7 million worth of cars, a
108% gain over the $398 million it
sold in 2020-and a full quarterbillion
dollars ahead of its closest
live-auction-house competitor. "
This competitor was Mecum
Auctions which had $578 million
in sales in 2021, according to
Bloomberg. Hagerty pointed out
that BaT sellers received a 24%
premium on average compared to
other online auction sites. James
provided examples of the exact
same cars (identified by VIN numbers)
sold multiple times through
different online auction sites to
show the premium from selling on
BaT. Alternatively, you can list
your BMW on the CCA website's
Marketplace Classifieds if you prefer
to sell to another enthusiast.
BMW M cars are both fun to
drive and offer enthusiasts an
opportunity for an interesting nontraditional
investment. Even if you
put some mileage on your M car, as
long as you take care of it, historical
data shows that the values tend to
increase over time. It's difficult to
predict the next M model that will
jump significantly in value, but
James anticipates the best examples
of cars like the E30 M3 have room to
go higher. Perhaps the Z8 which
has appreciated 7% since 2019
could fall into a similar category in
the future. Despite not being
badged an M, is often considered an
M because of its V8 S62 engine that
was shared with the E39 M5.
The best examples of BMW Ms and
special edition models will always
command a premium with collectors,
but James believes they still
represent a good value, given their
price points compared to other
manufacturers. I look forward to
seeing how these trends play out
and which BMW M cars will
appreciate more in value than we
anticipate.
