as well as stated insurance values of
their customers' collector cars.
James shared Hagerty data that
showed how most BMW Ms have
appreciated - and some models
quite dramatically. For example,
E30 M3s are up 34% since 2019
and prices are approaching double
their inflation-adjusted original
Manufacturer Suggested Retail
Prices (MSRPs). More recent M3s
such as the E36 and E46s are also
steadily increasing in value, though
they have not yet experienced
the jump like E30s and are still
selling below their inflation-adjusted
MSRPs. James also commented on
valuation trends for M models
including the E34 M5, E24 M6, E36
M Roadster and M Coupe, Z8,
and 1 Series M Coupe. All of this

Here are a few takeaways that I
found particularly interesting:
Inflation Adjusted MSRPs can
help you spot a " good value " -
A metric Hagerty uses to track
appreciation is inflation adjusted
MSRPs, in order to compare prices
when the car was originally sold
new versus the average current
market price. Desirable cars for
which the current market price is
well below the inflation adjusted
MSRP, may represent a " good
value. " Such cars have not appreciated
as much relative to other
collector cars, so buyers get a lot of
car for the money with room for the
value to increase if demand goes up.
Younger buyers can be an indication
of where the collector
market is going - You might be
surprised to learn that during the
pandemic, there was a massive
uptick in insurance quotes for
BMWs from younger collectors.
Hagerty insurance quotes from Gen
Z (born 1997-2012) and Millennials
(1981-1996) increased from 26% to
34% of total Hagerty quotes from
2020-2021. These buyers can be
seen as a leading indicator of where
market interest is going. James also
pointed out younger buyers tend to
insure their BMWs for stated values
in line with older generations, which
shows they ascribe similar values to
these cars.
Collectors want " analog "
experiences - In today's age of
electric cars, autonomous vehicles,
and ultra-high-performance hypercars,
there is a countertrend where
collectors seek pure " driver's cars "
that afford enjoyable driving experiences.
For example, cars with manual
transmission sell for 15-20%
more than the same car with automatic.
Cars that embody this trend
like the M Roadster, the M version of
the Z3, were not the fastest cars of
their era but stand up well to modern
roadsters because they are unique,
relatively affordable, and are fun to
drive. Collectors enjoy these cars
because they were made with just
the right mix of modern engineering
and simplicity - which is increasingly
rare as more technology
consumes the cockpit in new cars.
Protecting (while enjoying)
your investment - During the
Q&A, James was asked if paint
protection film (PPF) and ceramic
coatings are viewed as desirable for
collector vehicles. The short answer
is " yes, " particularly for modern
cars. This might not be the case for
original antique cars that are rarely
driven or for restorations, but that
assessment can be case by case
depending on how the car is used.
James said that these add-ons are
generally a good sign that the previous
owner invested in taking care of
the car, plus it will have been more
protected from wear and tear. PPF
has improved over the past decade
