NCC Volunteer Spotlight
Raine Mantysalo

he archives of NCC's der Bayerische(dB)magazine are an excellent source
for learning the club's history dating back to its formation in 1971. If you
read through past issues, which I highly recommend, you'll discover the
names of the active members whose continued contributions both shaped the
club and have had lasting positive effects. Raine Mantysalo belongs to that
group of foundational members.
Raine's name first appeared in
print in dB in the NovemberDecember
1982 issue when he
covered an event titled " History of
the BMW Presented by Lothar
Schuettler. " In the same issue the
editors at the time, Bernice and Ira
Winthrop, announced they were
handing editorial duties over to
Raine starting with the JanuaryFebruary
1983 issue.
I asked Raine how his role as
Editor of dB came to be and he
recounted the story: " I attended a
meeting arranged by Gordon
Kimpel at a Rockville high-rise
where Lothar Schuettler had
brought an M1 and his 327. They
were looking for a new Editor and I must have convinced them that I was the guy.
At that time, my added bonus was being able to take pictures of cars being
tested at various events, develop the film, make prints and halftones, and then

paste up the entire issue for the printer. I wasn't much of an Editor, in my
opinion, but I filled the need. Besides a short time off, I've been laying out the
magazine, then called a newsletter, for over 25 years. "
Looking back at Raine's first Editor's Column in January 1983, he wrote,

■ (Top) In 2010, Raine purchased another 1976 2002 to relive the experience
of owning his first 2002. At Deutsche Marque Concours it won First Place in
2011, was the Winner in Meister Class in 2012, and came Second in 2013.
" This is my first effort in producing the Club newsletter... A great many photographs
have been used to better illustrate
and complement the articles. " This was
just the first of many significant updates
dB has seen over the years with Raine at
the helm. As the club evolved, so did dB,
with just a few of the major enhancements
being the introduction of typesetting in
1983, various style, format, and production
method updates throughout, changing
to full-color print in 2011, and going
digital in 2020. Thanks to Raine's dB
production vision, Classic Motorsports
magazine spotlighted NCC's der
Bayerischeas " Newsletter of the Month " in
their May 2011 issue, stating that dB " has
been a great publication for 40 years.
Now it has an extra feature: full color...
To be honest, the volume stands on its own
without the added hues. "
In that first column he also reflected on why he joined the club: " I joined
BMW CCA for the first time some six years ago (1977) when I had just
purchased a new '76 2002 in Montana. I recently rejoined the Club after
