Well, I actually didn't mention this, but
Cory volunteered the full story,
unprompted: " There was a German car
concours in Richmond. SLEEPR, my
'75 E12 had just been restored to
pristine condition, and I wanted to see
how it would show. I don't remember
the results, but the ride home was a
hoot. Three of us left together for the
typically 90-minute slog back. I was
lead, followed by Larry Masten in his
E24, and Raine in his E21. We encountered
a 5.0 Mustang GT and I went to
pass. I guess he thought he had the
better car and started speeding up.
Little did he know that we were all highly
skilled " track rats " , very comfortable cruising at speeds most people won't
attempt, with cars modified for that purpose. The road opened up and he was at
his max. I blew past at a high rate of speed, then Larry, and finally Raine. I'm
guessing the 5 and 6 Series cars weren't THAT bad, but being blown out by a
stock-looking 320i was embarrassing. His girlfriend was in the car, and he had
a death grip on the steering wheel. I had one hand on my side mirror, completely
composed. He didn't give up though, and we ended up hitting the 14th St.
bridge in an hour and five minutes from
Shockoe Slip. A great ride, almost as
fun as the five-car caravan to
Bridgehampton. But that's another
story... " I guess the saying is true, time
flies when you're having fun!

this story to tell: " Whenever I traveled to
a CCA Oktoberfest, Raine, who didn't
go, would jokingly ask me to call him
when he won the raffle. Years ago,
raffle winners were announced at O'fest.
I assured him I would. Well, it
happened one year. His number was
called, his name was called out, mispronounced of course. Our table of NCCers
cheered. I immediately left the ballroom to call him. " Raine, I'm calling from the
O'fest banquet. You won. " He thought I was joking. I repeatedly assured him I
would not joke about such a thing. Suddenly he was interrupted by another call.
That was Steven Schlossman from the National Office confirming that he had
won. Raine told me his left palm had been itching that evening, apparently an
old Finnish saying that one was about to come into money. Hmmm. " Raine's
