supposed to represent the next step
for the Bugatti company, a serious
response to the Auto Union and
Alfa Romeo racing teams, but it
also became the downfall of the
original company. By the mid1930s
Le Mans was becoming the
premier long-distance race we know
today, and the problem was that the
Type 35 wasn't fast enough on the
Mulsanne straight. To address this,
a new monoque " tank " chassis was
developed, and further tuning of the
Type 59's engine increased output
to 200 hp. Three Type 57G " tank "
chassis were assembled for the
1939 Le Mans race, but during a test
drive of one of the Type 57Gs, a
cyclist rode into the road ahead, the
driver reacted by swerving to avoid
the cyclist, crashing the car and
killing himself. The driver was Jean
Bugatti, Ettore's son. Like his father,
Jean was a car enthusiast and had
devoted his life to the Bugatti brand.
He had gone to school for automotive
design and was actively working
inside the company at the factory
and at the race track. Jean's accident
and the start of WWII was the
beginning of the end for the original
Bugatti marque.

Thankfully, many of the Ettore
Bugattis survive to this day and the
Simeone Museum is kind enough to
show these cars off in motion, allowing
you to step back in time as if a
spectator in a bygone era of racing.
If you're headed north-east and have
time to spare for the journey, taking
the Bay Bridge in the off-season and
stopping for lunch in Chesapeake
City beats the I-95 corridor and the
typical rest-stop food court selection.
