Make New Friends, Keep the Old
The 2021 New Member Event

n July 17th our chapter held its first New Member Event of the year at
Passport BMW in Marlow Heights, MD. This event was more than
just a reception and presentation for new members - it began with
Cars & Coffee, which was followed by a tour of Passport's Collision Center,
and it concluded with each NCC Program Chair speaking about their
respective programs. Both the Cars &
Coffee portion and Collision Center tour
were open to all members, so it was a
great way for experienced NCC'ers to
meet and greet prospective members
and those who recently joined our
organization.
It was forecast to be a hot day and
the meteorologists were correct. It was
already in the 80s by 8 a.m. and the only
sign of relief was a storm system coming
through later that afternoon. However, as
they say, time flies when you're having
fun, so the morning went by quickly
despite the heat. There were a number of
modern " super " BMWs in attendance,
such as a trio of M2 CSes, a pair of M4
GT4s, and a new M3 Competition among
others that caught my attention.
The vintage parking section consisted of three E30s, two 2002s, a Bavaria, and
a partridge in a pear - sorry, I got carried away - an E34 M5.

Since this was a NewMember Event, let's meet two newmembers and

find out more about them. Is it just me, or does making new friends always
seem easier at car events? I first spoke with Stephen Powell who brought
his stunning 2017 M Sport X4, with an exceptionally clean interior.
He recently joined our chapter after seeing our club Instagram account
tagged on a post, which piqued his
interest (score one for social media
outreach). While this was his first NCC
event, Stephen and his wife, Shauna,
attended the BMW Ultimate Driving
Experience at FedE x Field earlier in the
year where he autocrossed an M440i
and placed well in the competition.
Stephen has a background in drag
racing, but would like to become
involved with NCC's autocross
program. Additionally he is looking
forward to more Cars & Coffee events
as well as Tours with the group.
He's currently shopping for a second
BMW - an E30. E30? I have a feeling
Stephen and I are going to get along
quite well. Welcome, Stephen!
Malik McAdoo was our newest
member as he signed up the day of the event. He was introduced to the club
by Mandy Cole, a lover of all things BMW whom I'd previously met at the
