achine polishing a vehicle's
paint is one of the most
daunting topics in the auto
detailing world. The nonprofessional
detailer is challenged to understand
machine polishing because of
the large number of machine polishers,
products, and supplies that are
available. Online forums and social
media can make the topic of machine
polishing even more complicated for
the nonprofessional. If a weekend
warrior's goal is to properly machine
polish their own BMW, there are
three steps they need to do in order
to be successful. First, the weekend
detailer needs to understand why he
or she is polishing their car's paint
and have a realistic goal in mind.
A person should also possess a
basic understanding of the equipment,
products, and supplies that are
used during machine polishing.
The last step, once the first two steps
are achieved, is to practice. Once the
aspiring detailer has accomplished
these three steps, he or she will be
better set up to succeed when
machine polishing their BMW.

It is well known that when done
correctly, machine polishing can
make a car's paint look great. In
some cases, it can also be used to
restore paint which has been
improperly cared for or neglected.
Scratches and paint damage from
neglect require you to cut the paint
around the scratch down to the
deepest level of the scratch.
Removing paint from your BMW
should rarely be the primary goal of
machine polishing. The main goals
of machine polishing are to remove
contaminants from your car's paint,
improve gloss, and prepare the
paint for a wax or sealant. These
goals can be accomplished by
hand, however, the task is much
quicker and the results are superior
with a machine. The nonprofessional
detailer can then spend the
extra time focusing on properly
maintaining their car's paint, with
frequent hand washing. Hand
washing a vehicle's paint removes
water soluble contaminants and
prevents the paint from exhibiting
light to moderate scratches.
Modern clear coats can scratch very
easily. It is inevitable that some
very light scratches will appear over
time, even with proper hand washing.
Machine polishing a car once
a year can help remove or hide very
light scratches. Again, the main
goals of machine polishing for the
nonprofessional, are to remove
non-water soluble contaminants
from the paint and prepare it for a
wax or sealant.
