competition, a switch that helped
everyone stay involved and moved
things along a bit. Each flight had its
own Longest Drive and Closest to
the Pin holes with prizes for lowgross
foursome and individual prizes
for the skill holes.
Paul and I were in the first
group out, joined by first-timer Amr
Alkhateeb. Amr is the owner of
BimmerWerks in Beltsville, MD and
a master BMW technician. Before
opening BimmerWerks, Amr worked
for several BMW dealerships and
regaled us with behind-the-scenes
insights into life as a BMW technician.
Amr also is a prolific buyer and
seller of older and classic BMWs,
telling one story about how he
bought and sold three BMWs in
a matter of about 30 minutes. For
comparison, I have owned a total of
three BMWs during the past 20
years.
Our threesome started out
strong, sitting at -under after just six

holes, but we faded down the stretch
to finish at 3-under 69. The foursome
of Tim Gallagher, Chris Henn,
Shaun Cavan, and Kent Bingaman
ended up winning low gross with an
impressive 11-under par 61. Two
more groups were just behind at 10under
62 including the team featuring
Chris Hanessian, Weston
Hanessian, Mason Carmel, and Tom
Gathright as well as one with Adam
Chelikowsky, Laith Layous, Ryan
Mosel, and Mike Mosel. Sadly, there
was no prize for coming in second.
Adam and I actually were in a group
together at my first outing in 2010.
Given where our respective groups
finished in 2021, I may have to
consider switching my allegiance
next year.
For the individual awards, Kelly
Hwang won Closest to the Pin on #5
for the Social flight while Ray Hunter
won in the Competitive flight on the
difficult 13th hole. Longest Drive
went to Mason Carmel on #3 in the
Competitive flight but the Social
flight honors went unclaimed.
Apparently, no one hit the fairway, a
prerequisite for winning Longest
Drive.
As the golfing ended, everyone
gathered in the clubhouse for the
traditional Raspberry Falls BBQ
buffet. Pork, chicken, baked beans,
potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni
salad, and chocolate chip cookies
awaited as everyone shared updates,
chatted, and enjoyed actual, inperson
human conversation. Golf
stories ( " missed it by that much " )
were interspersed with discussions
about cars, travel, friends, and family.
Willy served as Master of
Ceremonies, announcing the prize
winners and jokingly offering up
Paul's services to detail cars, clean
houses, and change your oil.
Between his on-course heckling
( " Hurry up, there's only three of
you! " ) and MC-ing antics, it was
apparent Willy may have been
enjoying some of the same beverages
as Alaina and Twinny.
Paul once again had gathered a
terrific set of prizes courtesy of
BMW of Silver Spring. The winning
team won a free foursome at any of
Willy's courses (Augustine Golf
Club, Old Hickory Golf Club, Bull
Run Golf Club, and Raspberry Falls)
and the individual prize winners
walked away with BMW golf bags.
There were also cooler bags, detailing
kits, hats, and other BMW-branded
goodies given away as door
prizes. BMW of Silver Spring continues
to offer generous support for
many club activities and everyone
was most appreciative. Most of my
BMW apparel, including the golf shirt
I am wearing as I write this, are
courtesy of the terrific folks at BMW if
Silver Spring. I do not think Paul has
purchased any BMW-branded clothing
or accessories in years.
Next up on the NCC golf calendar
is the EuroMarque battle with
Porsche (and Mercedes and Audi if
they show up). That competition is
set for autumn when BMW will be
defending its crown and Porsche will
be trying to reclaim bragging honors
to go with the winner's trophy they
swiped from Willy's office last year.
