AHEPA FAMILY CHAPTER NEWS
District 20
El Camino Real District 20
The district hosted the 2016 Western Regional
District Convention in Anaheim, Calif. More
than 150 delegates represented Districts 17, 20,
21, and 22. The scholarship luncheon awarded
$48,000 to students from the four districts participating. Alexis Noyes, a past scholarship recipient, delivered a moving speech that expressed
gratitude to AHEPA for helping her to reach her
educational goals. The annual event was chaired
by co-hosts, Brent Noyes, District 20 and Mary
Gavrilis, District 21. At the convention banquet, Brother Nick Edwards received the District 20 Lifetime Achievement Award for 65
years of service to the Order. The Order also honored Philhellene Chris Hillman with the 2016 AHEPA District 20 Periclean Award.
Chris is a founding member of The Byrds and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. Hillman, an Orthodox Christian, is performing
charitable concerts at many Orthodox churches in support of the campaign to rebuild St. Nicholas National Shrine, helping to raise
nearly $200,000. Actress Jenni Pulos served as the emcee.
District 24
AHEPA Chapter CJ10, Edmonton, Alberta
The chapter, in cooperation with the Department of History & Classics,
University of Alberta in Edmonton, sponsored a program titled, "Ancient
Greece at the Movies." The program showcased films that provided students,
staff and the general public with an appreciation of ancient Greece's contribution to Western Civilization. Medea, 300, Phaedra, and Trojan Women
were some of the films shown. Staff introduced each film with a presentation. Chapter CJ10, the Alberta Association for Media Awareness, the
Alberta Association for Multicultural Education, the Canadian Multicultural
Education, the Alberta Hellenic Congress, and the Friends of Hellenism
sponsored the program, enabling it to be free to attendees. Separately, the
Department of History & Classics is working in cooperation the chapter to
hold a weekend symposium celebrating AHEPA's anniversary in Canada.
District 25
Hellas District 25
The district held its AHEPA Cup 2016 Beach Volleyball
Tournament in beautiful Nafpaktos, Greece, July 15-17,
2016. Twenty-eight mixed-doubles teams (56 athletes)
participated from Greece and abroad, including the United
States. Thanks to major sponsor LOUX soft drinks for helping to make the tournament a success. The tournament
coincided with the District 25 convention.
