n 2020, Turkey's aggressive behavior and provocative acts in the Eastern Mediterranean have escalated
steadily at an alarming rate and are egregious. Turkey's
announced plan in July to conduct seismic surveys by
encroaching upon Greece's continental shelf off the
coast of the Greek island of Kastellorizo drew the strong
condemnation of AHEPA in a July 21, 2020 statement issued by
Supreme President George G. Horiates.
"Turkey's act destabilizes the Aegean and Eastern
Mediterranean to the great concern of the American Hellenic
community and diaspora," he said. "The region has become a
tinderbox due to Turkey's blatant hostilities, which are dangerous
and unnecessarily place lives in harm's way, and furthermore, are
not in the United States' best interests."
Supreme President Horiates echoed the repeated calls for the
United States and European Union to hold Turkey accountable
for its provocations and hostile actions through the imposition of
sanctions in the name of peace, justice, and stability.

Moreover, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's formal
action to change the status of Hagia Sophia, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, from a museum to a mosque following a Turkish
court's decision that paved the way for him to do so, also transpired in July and drew an equally strong statement of condemnation issued by AHEPA on July 10, 2020.
AHEPA Keeps Pressure On: Calls for Boycott, Protests
Turkey's Provocations
Under the leadership of Supreme President George G. Horiates,
AHEPA has responded to Turkey's provocations through a series
of actions and advocacy.
In a July 14 commentary piece, Supreme President Horiates
conveyed AHEPA's alarm at the eradication of Turkey's religious and cultural heritage, especially Christian and Hellenic, in
the wake of Hagia Sophia's status change from a museum to a
mosque. He called for a boycott of Turkish Airlines and Turkish
products, providing examples of Turkey's top imports to the
