organized the protest. The peaceful protest took an ugly turn
when counter-protestors exhibited Turkish propaganda and
physically blocked access to the public sidewalk in front of the
Embassy of Turkey which is located on Massachusetts Avenue,
NW. Supreme President Horiates, in cooperation with the U.S.
Secret Service and Metropolitan DC police personnel, resolved
what was becoming a tense situation.
AHEPA Advocates to Hold Turkey Accountable

Trade Representative, "U.S. goods imports from Turkey totaled
$10.3 billion in 2018, up 9.8% ($924 million) from 2017, and up
122.7% from 2008," and he stated, "This trend must stop."
"AHEPA will explore opportunities to rally the community,
and bring all peoples together, at venues and sites to raise awareness to key audiences that Erdogan's action is unacceptable to a
variety of communities, organizations, and sectors, and it cannot
be allowed to stand," he wrote.

An AHEPA-backed bipartisan amendment sponsored by U.S.
Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) that is accompanied by language that
encourages the U.S. Department of State to denounce Turkey for
taking formal action to change the status of Hagia Sophia passed
the U.S. House of Representatives, July 23, 2020. The language
also encourages the State Department to engage with Turkey for
purpose of returning its status to a museum. The amendment is
part of a larger FY2021 funding bill, H.R.7608, the House passed
on July 24, 2020.
"We applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for passing
language that encourages the State Department to take action
with regard to Hagia Sophia's status," Horiates said. "We sincerely
appreciate the lead sponsorship of Congresswoman Titus, who
testified to the Rules Committee and who spoke in support of
her amendment on the House floor today. We are grateful for the
bipartisan support of the amendment's co-sponsors that propelled its passage."
