The AHEPAN Fall 2020 - 12

Left: U.S. Sen. Menendez questions Secretary Pompeo about Turkey's acquisition of a Russian missile system and its violation of U.S. law. Right:
U.S. Rep. Titus speaks in favor of her amendment encouraging the State Department to denounce the conversion of Hagia Sophia to a mosque.

On July 20, Supreme President Horiates sent a letter of strong
support to the House Rules Committee for the amendment and
for it to advance to the House floor for a vote.
"We appreciated the opportunity to work in cooperation with
Congresswoman Titus on this important measure," he added.
On the Senate side, AHEPA sent a July 29 letter authored
by Supreme President Horiates, to the Committee on Foreign
Relations, prior to the committee holding a hearing with
Secretary Mike Pompeo, requesting that key matters pertaining
to United States engagement in the Eastern Mediterranean be
addressed during the hearing as it relates to the aggressive and
provocative behavior of Turkey.
The letter contributed to a line of questioning and exchange
between Ranking Member Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Secretary
of State Pompeo during the July 30 hearing on the topic of
imposing sanctions on Turkey for its violation of the Countering
America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
"We thank Senator Menendez for his tireless
effort to hold Turkey accountable for violating U.S.
law," Supreme President Horiates said. "Turkey has
proven to be an unreliable NATO partner and its
acquisition of the Russian S-400s is evidence."
Furthermore, the U.S. Department of State has
responded to AHEPA's concerns. In an August 4
letter, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for
European and Eurasian Affairs Matthew Palmer,
who responded at the request of Secretary
of State Pompeo, to a July 22 letter sent by
Supreme President Horiates about Turkey's
provocations in the Aegean conveyed the
United States' "deep concern." Palmer wrote,
"We continue to urge Turkish authorities to

halt these activities and to avoid steps that raise tensions in the
region. We fully agree that a conflict between two NATO Allies
must be avoided."
Deputy Assistant Secretary Palmer also addressed the issue
raised by Supreme President Horiates of sanctioning Turkey
under existing U.S. law, stating in the letter, "The Administration
continues to object strenuously to Turkey's S-400 purchase."
Palmer cited Turkey's suspension and pending removal from the
F-35 program as a further response to Turkey's acquisition of the
Russian-made S-400 missile system.
"We sincerely thank the State Department, and specifically
Deputy Assistant Secretary Palmer, for responding in great detail
to AHEPA's concerns about Turkey's aggression toward Greece
and its overall behavior in the region," Horiates said. "However,
given Turkey's renewed provocations in the Aegean this week,
we urge the State Department to send a stronger message to
Turkey that unequivocally condemns Turkey's actions that escalate tensions and unnecessarily places lives in harm's way.
Turkey must be held accountable."
Finally, AHEPA sent a letter to
President Donald J. Trump to convey
the Order's alarm and grave concern
about Turkey's aggressive acts in the
Aegean and urged President Trump to
encourage Secretary Pompeo to send
a strong message to Turkey to stop its
hostile behavior in the region. Moreover,
in the letter, Supreme President Horiates
asked the Administration to 1) condemn
Turkey's actions and 2) to impose sanctions on Turkey for its violation of U.S.
law.
