New England Ahepans Sponsor a Service Dog
After a two-year fundraising program, District 9 proudly
achieved its goal of raising $15,000 to sponsor a service dog for a
veteran through the AHEPA Service Dogs Program, announced
District 9 Governor Nick Kallan.
"We are proud to be able to provide a service dog to a veteran who is suffering from
Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), often
referred to as the invisible wounds of war,"
Governor Kallan said.
Governor Kallan initiated a contest among the
District 9 chapters in Maine, New Hampshire, and
Vermont that the chapter that raised the most funds
would get to select the name of the service dog.
The chapters responded with a great deal of
enthusiasm to that call and the honor
of naming the service dog went to
Parthenon Chapter 215, Portsmouth,
N.H. The chapter selected the name,
Delphi, for the district's service dog.
When asked why they chose Delphi, Chapter President Fotis
Zotos stated, "We wanted a name with linkage to our Hellenic
ideals that also stands for Wisdom and Life. Delphi is named
after the Oracle of Delphi, which was the temple
of the ancient God, Apollo, known as the God of
Wisdom. Delphi was believed to be the center
of the universe and where leaders went to seek
advice. The word, Delphi, also has the meaning
of 'female womb' or Life; hence 'bringing our veterans back to normal life.'"

the thought and detail that went into
selecting Delphi's name.
Governor Kallan appreciated the efforts
of the District 9 Lodge officers and District 9 chapters for participating in this noble cause.

Day Weekend.
Chapter 156 president, Nick Mahramus,
and the president of the Canonsburg AHEPA
156 Philanthropic Society, Frank Skolikas,
presented a $500 donation to CrabtreeKovacicek Veterans House, Washington, Pa.
The Ahepans made the donation in memory of those who have fallen and in support
of those who need the assistance.
