AHEPA, SOP partner to benefit treatment of substance abuse
AHEPA and the Sons of Pericles partnered up to support "Waves
to Wellness," a nonprofit dedicated to raise awareness of substance abuse and the devastation it causes families by organizing a fishing tournament held August 8, 2020 off the coast of
New Jersey.
Former Thermopylae Chapter 445 President Dr. Basil
Karayiannis and his family founded "Waves to Wellness" after
experiencing a personal tragedy with the death of their son,
Michael, in 2019, in memory of Michael. The goals of "Waves
to Wellness" are to provide financial grants for treatment and
rehabilitation, education through prevention and breaking the
stigma that prevents thorough treatment of those afflicted with
substance abuse disorder.
The inaugural Waves to Wellness fishing tournament
departed from Avalon, N.J. in honor of Michael's memory and
his love for fishing. Sons of Pericles members representing the
District 5 Lodge and chapters from Upper Darby,
Pa., Camden, N.J., with support from Ahepans
representing Hercules-Spartan Chapter 26,
Philadelphia; Thermopylae Chapter 445, Upper
Darby; Camden Chapter 69; and Chapter 515,
Radnor, Pa., enjoyed a fun-filled day out on the
open seas to raise funds for Waves to Wellness.
Supreme President George G. Horiates also
attended and lent his support to the cause.
Dr. Karayiannis thanked AHEPA, particularly
Brother Peter Chletcos, for their support. As for
the Sons of Pericles members, he stated, "I am
so impressed they took the time to fundraise,
sponsor and support this wonderful program this
year. This is on the heels of the Sons of Pericles
coming to Temple-Jeanes Hospital in Northeast
Philadelphia in the spring for the AHEPA Cares
initiative to provide meals for the health care
staff. On behalf of my family, it is great to see the
Junior Order step up in this manner to help us
fulfill our mission."
He added, "By raising awareness of the disease we can change the conversation surrounding
substance abuse disorder to create understanding
and compassion, thus breaking the stigma and
removing the shame that prevents individuals
from seeking thorough treatment. We strive to
provide education for prevention in communities
and early intervention to families in need to help
eradicate this devastating disease. We work to
ensure that those afflicted with this disease have
access to proven treatments and long-term recovery programs. We thank AHEPA and the Sons of
