Service Dogs for Warriors Project
Through the "AHEPA Service Dogs
for Warriors National Project,"
AHEPA continues to raise awareness about the consequences of
PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and the extraordinary efforts
to improve the quality of life of
veterans suffering from PTSD
made possible through service
dogs. The U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates
that between 11 and 20 percent
of veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer
from PTSD in a given year. AHEPA encourages the
community to support this worthy program and has
joined with "K9 for Warriors" (www.k9sforwarriors.
org) to provide the community with the ability to
help.
How It Works
K9 for Warriors pairs a service
dog (usually a rescue dog) with a veteran suffering from PTSD. The results
have been uplifting. These wonderful
service dogs are a proven recovery
tool, empowering veterans to return to
civilian life with dignity and independence. The cost to train a service dog
is $15,000. However, there is no cost
to the veteran. The dog is initially
trained alone, and when paired with a
veteran, the two spend three weeks training together
at the K9 for Warriors facility in Florida.
Help Us Reach Our Goal
AHEPA's involvement with K9 for Warriors began
through an initiative led by Garden State Chapter 517,
Holmdel, N.J. The chapter sponsored AHEPA's first service dogs and appropriately named the dog, "AHEPA."
In October 2016, "AHEPA" and Brian, a veteran,
graduated from their training program.
Thus far, the "AHEPA Service Dogs for
Warriors National Project" has raised
funds to sponsor four service dogs
for veterans. In 2018, it is anticipated
funds will be raised to sponsor another
four service dogs, making it a total of
eight dogs sponsored by the AHEPA
family. The program's goal is to raise
funds to sponsor 22 service
dogs annually.
