ABOUT THE ORDER

The AHEPA Emblem

We See It Everywhere, But What Does It Mean?
By Executive Director Basil N. Mossaidis
The AHEPA emblem is composed
of several elements that were well
thought-out by our Founding Fathers.
AHEPA's emblem has a long, historic
meaning to the brotherhood. As a fraternity, the Order has a history which
makes it different than any other
group in existence. AHEPA's history
and tradition are what make it the
greatest fraternal Hellenic Heritage service organization in the world.
The AHEPA emblem can be seen
on its banners, letterhead, flags, membership cards, certificates, awards and
all communications. It is trademarked.
It is full of meaning. The first, most
striking element is the cross. The cross
is meant to remind us of the burdens
we must bear and that we should emulate the Biblical example by sharing
the burden of our brother whose cross
is heavier than ours. The cross can
also be emblematic of sacrifice, forgiveness, compassion and tolerance,
victory over death, and a path to a new
life. All these interpretations are at the
core of an Ahepan's heart. The cross
is symbolic of the victory Emperor
Constantine experienced and a symbol
he adopted for his new empire.
Behind the cross we find the
ancient crossed Hellenic swords,
double edged, short and swift. They
remind us of a disciplined and chivalrous spirit. The swift and impartial
execution of justice, the obedience to
lawfully constituted authority, and the
readiness to uphold and defend democratic principles so characteristic of the
Hellenic culture.

THE AHEPAN ยท Spring 2018

As long as men are amenable to the
virtues exemplified by the cross and
swords, the rays of hope will always
be discernable. The sun and the rays
of the emblem reflect this, and despite
any challenge, represent that new,
brighter days are always ahead of us.
The sun will rise to support a faithful
and just people.
The ten stars in the border serve
to represent and remind us of the ten
Mother Lodge members who had the
vision and fortitude to band together
and create the fraternity. AHEPA was
founded in 1922 in Atlanta in direct
response to the evils of bigotry, discrimination and hatred. AHEPA also
served as a vehicle for those Greek
immigrants who were in search of
becoming better citizens. The ten stars
will forever shine brightly as they dedicated their lives to make the fraternity
take root and thrive.
Ever guarding and protecting the
eminent virtues, sound principles,
lofty ideals and traditions which these
symbols represent, comes the mightiest and most courageous, physical
and intellectual giants of the earth.
The spread eagle, hovering over the
cross and swords, is emblematic of
the protection of the precepts and
examples of the Order of AHEPA. The
eagle is king of the air. Though he built
his mansion in the sun, his keen eye
can discern far over the earth. He is
strong in battle, swift in triumph and
fierce in defeat. The eagle has always
been the chosen emblem of might and
power, safety and protection and of the

loftiness of sacred and noble purposes.
Crowning the path of the victorious
hosts of the Order of AHEPA as they
march on to a brighter and better
tomorrows, are the luxuriant and fruitful olive branches. The olive is one of
the most ancient and celebrated products of earth. From time immemorial,
the fruit of the olive tree has sustained
the warrior in battle and the saint in
peace. Hardiness and sturdiness are
the chief characteristics of the tree and
richness of substance renders the fruit
of the most valuable of human foods. It
flourishes in dry and rocky places, and
lives in unfavorable conditions. It is
evergreen, hence symbolic of immortality. The olive branches well attend
the emblem of AHEPA as we, the members, reap the benefits of the Order.
The Order of AHEPA, a benevolent,
chivalric Order composed of law abiding, peaceful brothers, that promotes
ancient Hellenic values worldwide.
