A read of this issue of The Ahepan will lead one to realize quickly the depth, scope and diversity of AHEPA's
invaluable work as a service organization in the community and as an important contributor to building and
strengthening ties between nations.
It was a true honor and privilege to lead AHEPA's delegation as part of the Third International Leadership
Mission to Israel, Cyprus and Greece with our colleagues at the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), B'nai B'rith
International, and Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. We stand firmly behind the
trilateral partnership, especially during such uncertain and unstable times in the region. Turkey's aggression, and
threats emanating from other sources, are pervasive throughout the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. We
encourage the partnership's expansion to like-minded nations in the region. Further, we will contribute and support the partnership as a diaspora where we can, especially in sectors of youth education/cultural exchanges, business and commerce, and tourism. Relationships were made, friendships born, and the emotional experience will
resonate with me for a lifetime. I commend my fellow Ahepans: Chairman of the Board Nick Aroutzidis, Canadian
President Christos Argiriou, Executive Director Basil Mossaidis, and our consultant, Andrew Kaffes, for their contributions to a successful mission and for representing the Order so professionally on an international stage.
As a veteran, I am extremely proud of our Order's efforts to recognize and honor veterans in our communities.
This issue highlights the ceremonies and events organized by our chapters and districts. Our gratitude goes to
the AHEPA Veterans Committee for its work in this worthy endeavor. With Memorial Day just around the corner,
our work goes on. Furthermore, the AHEPA Service Dogs program continues to make a difference in the lives of
veterans affected by PTSD. In addition to raising funds that helps provide a service dog to a veteran, the program
is raising awareness.
This issue also highlights some great strides our AHEPA Housing program is making in the construction of
affordable assisted living communities in Indiana. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies have been held and residents have
moved into facilities opened in New Albany, Indiana, and Indianapolis. Moreover, a third property in Elkhart,
Indiana, is on its way to completion. The target date for its opening is April 2019. For almost four decades, AHEPA
has been providing affordable, dignified housing for low-income seniors. AHEPA's efforts have helped seniors to
live independently. Today, AHEPA can be proud to be associated with providing another invaluable service to our
nation's elderly-critical support services that assisted living offers to seniors who still want to live independently.
On behalf of the Supreme Lodge, I commend the AHEPA family of Dallas, Texas, which hosted a Regional
Banquet themed, "Philotimo" in January. The community did a fantastic job to honor excellence in community
service provided by social services organizations and stellar individuals who unselfishly have given back to
their communities. The Regional Banquet in Dallas was such a success that we used it as a model for hosting the
Midwestern Regional Banquet in Columbus, Ohio.
In May, we look forward to our annual walk through the Halls of Congress. This year, AHEPA Capitol Hill Day
will be held May 16. We encourage every chapter to send a representative to participate. It is critical to leverage
our grassroots presence to touch as many congressional offices as possible. Moreover, we will host a reception to
honor key legislators who have championed our mission through excellence in public service.
Finally, the 96th Annual AHEPA Family Supreme Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey, will be here before
we know it. The organizing committee and our headquarters staff are working diligently to provide a convention
program that is fun and entertaining. Catch a few details in this issue and please complete a registration form if
you plan to attend. The boardwalk, beach, and sun and fun, awaits.
