n a historic day for the Greek American community, Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic Kyriakos
Mitsotakis visited Tarpon Springs, Fla., and addressed
the community at the annual Epiphany Banquet hosted
by AHEPA and AHEPA George Washington Chapter 16,
Tarpon Springs, January 5, 2020.
It was also His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of
America's first time presiding over Epiphany Celebrations and
participation at AHEPA's Epiphany Banquet since he became
Archbishop.
In his address to the historic community, Prime Minister
Mitsotakis said, "I have to tell you I am deeply moved by the fact
that I am able to join you today and tomorrow on this special day,
here at Tarpon Springs. It is actually the first time that a sitting Prime
Minister attends this important celebration. It is a special moment
for me also personally when I recall the history of my family."
He added a reference to his well-known great uncle, "The last
important, prominent, towering, politician who visited Tarpon
Springs was Eleftherios Venizelos; 98 years ago. He came here
after having lost a national election. He came at the time in his
own words to discover the United States, to see for himself the
power and the strength of this new global power that was rising
on the horizon."
The prime minister also tipped his cap to the Greek American
community, "The Greeks of America, throughout the 20th century, stood by Greece. They came back to fight, but from here
they helped her materially and morally. But they did not forget it
in peace either. How many schools, hospitals, and institutions do
not bear the stamp of our expatriates."
The prime minister also previewed his approach to the White
House meeting with President Donald Trump, which was held
January 7.
"I will discuss with him the serious dangers posed by Turkey's
aggressive and illegal behavior to peace and security in the
region," he said. "I will repeat that we will not tolerate any violation of our sovereign rights. We will also discuss ways in which
we can strengthen the strategic relationship between our two
countries. These are times with unprecedented turbulence. We
must always remember that our country is a pillar of stability in
an increasingly volatile region. We are also a long-term, reliable
but predictable ally of the great country you call your new home."
Mayor of Tarpon Springs Chris Alahouzos and U.S.
Congressman Gus Bilirakis, who co-chairs the Congressional
Hellenic Caucus, both of whom are Ahepans, were among the
Top to Bottom: Supreme President Horiates, Archbishop Elpidophoros,
Prime Minister Mitsotakis, and Executive Director Mossaidis.
