Better than Before: A Year after Hurricane Florence

On the morning of September 14, 2018, Hurricane Florence
slammed into Wilmington, North Carolina. It moved at six mph
with sustained 90-mph winds. Florence caused devastating
damage with some areas receiving up to 34 inches of rain.
As a result, AHEPA 408 Apartments sustained significant
damage. The roof and the front door were blown off. Every
apartment sustained water damage. There was no power for
eight days. During that time, board members brought in food
for the residents. The residents and AMC staff were grateful to
the board for its outstanding effort.
As soon as the roads were clear, a team of workers from Paul
Davis Restoration, based in Texas, arrived to replace the roof.
However, Paul Davis could not start the restoration work until Residents of AHEPA 408 Apartments invited the crew of Paul Davis
February 2019. It took them nine months to complete all the Restoration to their Thanksgiving feast, giving thanks for the crew's help
work that was necessary. During the repairs for each section, to repair the facility following Hurricane Florence.
the residents had to be moved out of their apartments. The residents of that section had to stay at a local hotel for five weeks.
When completed, everyone was so excited to have freshly painted walls and new floors The board, staff, and the Paul Davis crew
went out of their way to ensure that the residents did not get overwhelmed by all the construction work.
Just before Thanksgiving all the residents got together and prepared a feast. They invited the Paul Davis crew to thank them for all
their hard work. The residents were thankful!

Service Coordinators Conference Proves Beneficial
AHEPA Management Company's Quality Assurance/Service Coordination
team participated in the annual SC Service Coordinator Conference held in
Louisville, Kentucky.
The Resource Center team presented on a variety of topics including:
"Personal and Technology Communications" and "Disaster Recovery"
(IT), "Human Resources, and Communications" (HR), "Communications,
Boundaries, Ethics" and "Resident Survey Results" (QA), "Documentation for
Service Coordination" (QA), "Handling Difficult Conversations" (SC), "Best of
Practices" and "Derby Days" (QA,SC). Guest expert speakers presented information on aging differently that compared generational differences, Virtual
Dementia Tour, healthy aging, social security, SAGE information, stroke, and
fraud.
Expanded offerings included computer labs (IT) after the closing sessions
each day. We welcomed five service coordinators from Graceworks. The participants enjoyed expanding their skills and knowledge
and networking with one another. The closing dinner included the theme of "Louisville Live" and awarding of service plaques awards.
From the perspective of the participants, the week was memorable and engaging.
